TOKYO -- Thousands of game fans queued for hours, braving Tokyo's early morning chill and occasional showers, as Sony's much-heralded and delayed PlayStation 3 game console went on sale on Saturday.

The PS3 is the latest entrant to the near $30 billion video game industry and will be fighting Microsoft's Xbox 360, on sale for the past year, and Nintendo's Wii, which will be in U.S. stores next week, for market share.

"I've been waiting for this day to come for so long. I'll play it all through the weekend. No time for meals," said hardcore gamer Tomoaki Nakamura, who already owns a PlayStation, a PlayStation 2, a PlayStation Portable handheld machine and an Xbox 360.

Nakamura, 41, was one of about 1,200 people in the meandering line around electronics retailer Bic Camera's flagship shop in central Tokyo.

Further up the queue was Robyn Sinclair, a 25-year-old exchange student from Vancouver. "It's the newest system, the latest and greatest thing ... although the Nintendo Wii looks very interesting, too," said Sinclair, who waited for more than 12 hours in the late autumn chill to score one of this year's hottest holiday items.

In the countdown to the 7.00 a.m. store opening, Ken Kutaragi, head of Sony's game unit, spoke to those in the queue. "I'm grateful that so many people are waiting for the PS3 ... I hope you will enjoy the next-generation entertainment to your heart's content," he said.

The latest Playstation has a Blu-ray high-definition DVD player and the Cell microchip, dubbed a "supercomputer on a chip," which provide lifelike graphics and high-speed downloading of game software and video clips.

But they have also driven up production costs, dragging Sony's game unit into a deep loss for the year to March.

Bic Camera said all its PS3 stocks were gone by noon, but declined to say how many units they had sold.

Tight supplies had been expected as Sony was able to ship only 100,000 units for the launch after a glitch in blue laser diode production caused a delay. The electronics and entertainment conglomerate sold nearly a million units of Playstation 2, the earlier version of the console, in the first three days of its Japan launch in 2000.

Sony has dominated the global video game industry for the past decade with its two previous models. But its iron grip could be loosened by the PS3's high prices and the strong performance of rival machines, as well as competition from handheld games, the Internet and mobile phones.

The basic model of the PS3, equipped with a 20-gigabyte hard disk drive, sells for 49,980 yen ($425), almost double the price of the Wii and more than a quarter higher than the Xbox 360.

Microsoft was first to launch the latest-generation game console, bringing its Xbox 360 to market late last year, a year ahead of Sony. By the end of 2006, Microsoft expects to have shipped 10 million Xbox 360s, well ahead of the PS3's expected shipment of 2 million units.

Following the Japan launch on Saturday, Sony plans to start rolling out the PS3 on November 17 in North America, and next March in Europe.

Nintendo's Wii will go on sale on November 19 in the United States and December 2 in Japan. It features a one-handed controller that looks like a TV remote and uses motion-detection sensors to allow players to control the game by wielding it like a sword or swinging it like a tennis racket.

Buy xbox 360 first. When PS3 price drops below RM2k, buy it. Do the same with Wii. And dont buy modded ones. Coz u might not be able to play online, like xbox 360

hope that no battery recall issue for PS3.

60GB selling at 59,800 YEN in japan, direct conversion is just RM1,852.14
of course we need to include mailing cost, import tax and handling fee, that's why I expect RM3,000

but maybe the game is expensive. or they need to pay the mafia for the queue in japan to get a unit.

I tink play in at least a good ventilation(better if got air cond) area should be fine. i mean dun hide ur ps2 inside the cabinet to make u room look neater n play long long. Even fat 1 also burn i tink if like dat coz all heat trapped at same area.

hmm i read in the papers a few days ago, that ps3 need to cover their losses from the wild technologies they are using for the ps3.... If im not mistaken, ps3 price is doubled of x-box and wiii.
But let me tell u, when i read the news abt ps3, with the chip they are installing and all....i think rm5k is worth the money...only that i dont have the money for it la hahaha

lense problem..
was quoted 300-400 bucks to fix it..
while the new slim (and sexy, accordin to zero4 -.-") one cost around 500..

Dilemma...
get new one or fix it?

mine's the special edition white colored Gran Turismo 4 pack.. ( i noe the name damn long)..
one shop recommended me to fix it since it's special edition and it's a fat unit..
another shop recommend me to get a new one since even if it's fixed it wont last long...

Get an xbox 360. At the moment, ps3 sucks. Go to gamespot.com and check the graphic comparison between ps3 and xbox 360. Xbox 360 wins. When they can make it better, then only get it.

I would repair the ps2, coz it's limited edition

I heard a RUMOUR that sony shop in klcc will bring in the ps3 next month with a price tag less than RM2000, coz in HK after conversion the 60gb model is only RM1700.

Someone said they already have ps3 displayed there but cannot test.

Hey Alien, ur PS2 special edition model is the most troublesome model because last time when I took my PS2 for repaired and saw there were 7 out of 9 PS2 special edition were pending for repair.
Besides that, just go for Fat model if you can get it. Slim model have problem to read certain games. Example, it cannot played 1st batch FIFA world cup from EA Sport. Changed to 2nd batch also can't played, then waits until 3rd batch only working fine. SHIT...
