The only thing that overshadowed the Nissan GT-R’s supercar-devouring abilities was the whole drama surrounding the launch control issue that voided the warranty if used. It create such a ruckus with everybody, including your cousin’s mailman, that Nissan decided to do away with it for the 2011 model.

The problem stemmed from the fact that a GT-R owner using the launch control would automatically void the manufacturer’s warranty if the service center found evidence of the launch control being used.

As soon as owners begun receiving their vehicles, stories and videos of the GT-R’s transmission and half-shafts grenading upon launch hit the interwebs, prompting the removal of the feature for the 2011 model.

Nonetheless, Nissan have reinstated it for the 2012 year models that have been given a minor aesthetic and performance revision. Although it is now labelled the R Mode Start Function, the purpose is pretty much the same, hitting the high three-second or low two-second range for the century sprint.

Things work slightly different for the 2012 models though, with the rev limit being raised slightly to 4,000rpm and the ECU programmed to disable the function after four consecutive runs to protect the GT-R’s tranny and drivetrain.

At the end of it all, the very core of the issue that caused it to be such a problem for the first gen models hasn’t actually been thoroughly cleared up, does using the launch control now still void the manufacturer’s warranty?
