McLaren won't give Montoya new engine

10 March 2006

Juan Pablo Montoya said after Friday's free practice he was not happy with the Mercedes engine placed in his McLaren. He prefers to have an engine switch but McLaren told him it's not going to happen.

"The engine doesn't have enough power," Montoya said. "I don't know why, but I am 7 km/h slower than Kimi on the straight with the same kind of engine. If we don't want to end up in 10th or 12th we should think about changing that engine. But I'm not the one who makes the decision about that."

And unfortunately for the Colombian he is right. The team told him they don't want to switch the engine and go back ten places at the grid. According to Ron Dennis there is nothing wrong with Montoya's engine. "The engines are perfectly fine. There is no difference between our engines."

McLarenF1 downtune Montoya's engine? I don't think so, it's a stupid move for McLaren's WCC.

maybe due to the aero tuning done by JP Montoya's mech. what do you think?

Might be something else. You're right about it being stupid for McLaren to shoot their left foot to favour the right, so that is definitely not the problem

ron dennis said both the current drivers can leave if they think the can have a better team elsewhere. (esp refering to kimi on his non-contract drive in 2007)

what the hell is happening to this silver arrow team?

Ron Dennis playing the mind game. He wants them (Kimi especially) to decide his future quick. Kimi, of course, would want to see how things pan out.

montoya is not as fast as Kimi cos Kimi driving is full throttle all the way, he won't bother to look after his engine... :)

I wonder what happen to montoya...last time in williams he quick but now he slow and always made a mistake.. :)

montoya's is an overrated driver....no point discussing..
Who's not overrated then? From who you heard he's damn good?

no la.... Montoya too fat liaw.... he heavier ma.. so the car slower than 7 km/h ma...Kimi lighter so the car faster.... hehehe

Montoya in my opinion was never that quick. No idea why they bother to hire him. During the Williams days, he was more of a dare devil driver than fast driver. People were raving about his overtaking moves, and thats about it.

In Mclaren last year, he was way too inconsistent and actually injure himself leaving him totally out of the championship race. He had too many incidences alst season and part of it was his fault. Don't see why Ron Dennis ever wants to keep him.

I agree... you have a point there.

If both McLaren cars are equal in every aspect, and if both drivers are equal, then there is only one explanation and that is the driver's weight.

FIA rules,
car + driver = total weight minimum is 600kgs after the race.

as per my understanding, driver weight shouldn't be an issue in F1, because team will place weight ballast for those car riding with lighter weight driver in order to meet FIA minimum weight.
