You would have to be blind if you’ve never seen one of those ‘Motorsports is Dangerous’ signs at a race track or motorsports arena and the saying couldn’t ring more true but one often forgotten quote that should rank up there with that is that motorsports isn’t a cheap game as well.

I mean sure there’s the grassroots scene such as gymkhana, drifting and perhaps even the odd open track day but once the game steps up a notch, so do the zeros on that pay check you’ll have to fork out if you want to keep playing. The big leagues like endurance racing requires a little more than just passion, you need some moolah.

Take for instance the recent regulation alterations for the Sepang 1,000km (S1K) that makes some of the older and much used cars ineligible to participate. In my opinion, it is indeed a noble effort to try and promote the use of newer cars that serve a heavier relevance in today’s market but as we mentioned, switching platforms will surely require more money to be forked out, something that maybe the bigger race teams can afford but not such a privilege for the smaller teams that are tight on budgets.

Furthermore, many of the smaller teams have already spent a considerable amount developing their race cars so having to ditch their current platforms and starting from scratch isn’t going to be easy on the wallet.

Additionally, the older race cars that were retired proved to be an easy way into racing for teams just starting up or privateers wanting in on the action. They could easily buy over these cars for an easier route into racing.

The challenge has always been to bridge the gap between the grassroots scene and the big leagues. We all know it isn’t going to be easy and the efforts continue but one of the biggest victories recently would have to be the endurance race organized by High Performance Challenge (HPC) in collaboration with Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM).

The HPC MAM 4 Hour Endurance was just the link between the grassroots and endurance racing as it did away with the rule of making older cars ineligible. This meant that some of the older chassis’ such as the EK Civics and Satrias could once again roar to life and carve the corners of Sepang International Circuit (SIC). It was sort of reliving the glory days of these race cars that were starting to collect dusts in the corners of workshops and stores.

A total of 17 cars lined up on the grid for the mini endurance race. Granted it wasn’t a huge number but bear in mind that this is the first time the race is being held and things like this will inevitably take a while to gather some lift. Lest we forget though, the primary target here is to provide a platform for the grassroots scene to make the leap to top-end racing.

One look at the entry list and you might notice a number of the big teams present such as Proton R3, Type-R Racing, Pentagon Racing, Red Bull Rookies and Kegani Racing but they weren’t running their newer machines, this time around it was the moment for the DC2 Integras, Corolla AE101 and Levins to come out and play.

Yours truly, Zerotohundred.com, were also getting in on the action together with Exotic Mods. Our very own Tom Goh teamed up with Exotic Mods’ Shedden Ee to pilot the old HPC Toyota Celica under the Zeorothundred.com/Exotic Mods banner. Although that endeavour didn’t go too well, with the car retiring early on, it was a priceless introduction into the world of racing and precisely proved the point we’re trying to make here.

The race itself kicked off without a hitch and the cars roared off down the straight. There were a total of three classes to be contested with the majority battling it out in the IPB and IPC classes. The top IPA class only had two teams contesting.

Right from the get go, one of the fiercest battles was between the Red Racing Motorsport Integra DC2 and the Pentagon Racing Integra DC2. The Pentagon Integra was so close to the Red Racing Integra it probably had a burnt spot on its front bumper from the backfire sprouting out the Red Racing car’s exhaust.

The battle between those two carried on for quite a while, with none of the drivers showing any sign of giving in. It resembled an MSS race more than an endure as the cars were thrashing it out like the chequered flag was just a corner away.

From early on, there were a number of cars that called it a day. The Proton R3 team barely made it off the grid, wrapping up a somber weekend for them. The Singaporean entry of Cybernetics Racing also saw their FD2 Civic give up the ghost with barely 20 laps on the counter.

The Zerotohundred.com/Exotic Mods team wasn’t having as good weekend right from scrutineering. Although the car passed, it started acting up as it had to be driven back to the pits. The alternator gave way, which marked the start of a never-ending battle to race.

A spare alternator was sourced, just in time to make the start. Shedden took to the wheel first, putting in some consistent laps around the 2:45 range, even punching in a quick 2:42 at one point. After the driver switch, the driveshaft finally gave way around the 33 lap mark, signifying the end of the team’s efforts in the race. It was a sad sight to see the car limp around Turn 4 before coming to a halt on the side.

Nonetheless, the race went on with a further drop out for the Titan Racing team. The sole Lotus Elise on the grid also had its racing come to an early halt as the clutch wore out, making shifting near impossible. The painful bit was the Lotus was past the three and a half hour mark, less than 30 minutes from finishing. Still, this is what racing is all about.

At the end of the day, the race was won by Type-R Racing, managing an impressive 87 laps to win the IPA class. The only other entrant in the IPA class, Cybernetics Racing, retired early on, making it a one-team show on the podium.

In the IPB class, Pentagon Racing finally managed to edge out Red Racing to take the win and second overall. Coming in behind Pentagon was Red Racing, who took third overall. The Red Bull Rookies completed the podium for the IPB class, taking fourth overall in the process.

It was a sweet win for Kegani Racing as the team took first and third in the IPC class with the other Titan Racing car sandwiched between them. This meant that Kegani Racing took fifth and seventh overall with Titan bagging the sixth overall spot.

At the end of the day, you could see the satisfaction carved over the faces of everybody involved, from the drivers, to the crew members and even the organisers. It was a huge victory for motorsports and hopefully the race becomes an annual affair.

One of the downsides for the race would be the lack of coverage and attendance but given this is the first time, we’re pretty sure things will pick up for the better.
