Hi guys,

I dropped by an exhaust shop today to get some ideas and estimation. I always thought that for Turbo, the bigger is better. So I had in my mind that I'll get a 3" pipe from the front + mid box (to quiet it down) + 3" muffler.

When the guy jacked up my car, he said the original pipe coming down the engine is 2.5", so putting a 2.5" is better. The original route bends up the rear axle. So, they said they will bend it using those bending machine, which makes the pipe look like your washing machind hose. I don't favour that type, so I'm wondering what other alternatives there are. Runnning it down the axle will be too low.

So guys, what do you think? 2.5" or 3". If 3", how do they convert from 2.5" to 3" in the front. I don't favour loud exhaust or sporty sounds. I just want the function of the big pipe (since mine is still the old 20 year old pipe) without the extra attention.

Thanks.

hey wideawake,

Since you're driving a turbocharged car, bigger doesnt necessarily mean louder...it could be on the contrary depending on your muffler!
I would suggest to go along with the 3", let it be free flowing. If you are worried about noise, just ensure that your rear muffler is an s-type box and not a straight thru type. Also a decent centre box would help keep the noise down.

If you want performance, scrap the centre box and have a straight flow rear box! nice power but rather loud. As for the rear axle issue, u dont have to have a pipe looking like a washing machine hose! Its hard to say without viewing the clearance and options underneath but I would suggest you try other exhaust shops, they should be able to use the right bending machine/ technique or weld two diff section of bends together to get a smooth result. You could try Ah Heng Exhaust which is located near summit and Giant in Subang...he can be pricey but the job is proffesional. There is also the reknown 'Jamal' and a handful of others.

Ask around afew exhaust shops and compare theyre options and prices...dont rush coz its a fairly good sum to spend on and you want to make the best choice. Hope this helps.

Cheers!

yes...do a surveys 1st b4...doing anythin....
good workmanship is the right deal here...!

Thank you for your extensive explanation a31gtst.

I wonder how to they convert the 2.5" pipe coming down from the engine into 3"? They just ketuk2 or there is a special piping for it?

I was running a 3 inch from turbo down through a resonator and a rear muffler.

Instead of gettng a washing machine hose you can get the exhaust shop to weld elbows to replace the ribbed bending.

Oh! Reflective muffler aka S-type not good for your turbo, instead get a big muffler canister (HKS Dragger),My N1 type HKS rear muffler isn't that loud with the resonator. Hope that helps

Jian Hang exhaust shop in Taman Bolton (search for the thread in Engines & Performance) does a damn good job. If you require `mandrel' bending, they can also do it for you. Maybe it'll cost more tho. Mandrel bent pipes don't crease or get crushed so it doesn't mess with the flow.

The `elbows' will do too, that's what i got. I think it works out cheaper. :P

The proprietor of Jian Hang suggested 2.5 inch piping since 3 inch is only for top end. The previous owner of my car had the 3 inch in. A big "laggy" I must say for city driving.

Other exhaust shop, errr, JFA? They're ok too. Been to both and I prefer Jian Hang coz the boss gives good advice and does the work too!

Hope that helps. Shop around some more. Maybe you'll find a hidden treasure.

:o Dont worry wideawake, from 2.5" to 3 inch isn't the matter. The wont be any ketuk2 coz the piping shop have the join for the 2.5 inch to 3 inch.
For me, 3 inch is good enough...it depend on how you wanted the car to react..
