Making an appearance as a concept back in the Frankfurt Motor Show last year, BMW has finally prepped up a production version of the new X5 Security Plus soon to make its global debut at the upcoming Moscow Motor Show. While from the outside it looks pretty much like a normal X5, the Security Plus is designed to withstand some serious firepower.
This F15-generation of the X5 could withstand rounds fired from the infamous AK-47 rifle and the only telltale that it is the bulletproof variant is the thick black borders around the windows that come with a polycarbonate coating. BMW said that this bulletproof X5 meets the requirements of protection level VR6, which is a step lower than the BMW 7-Series High Security that ticks the requirements of the VR7 ballistic protection standard.
Of course with all the weight added to this SUV to make it bulletproof, the power on the engine has also been pumped up. The turbocharged V8 gasoline engine now produces 444-horsepower, with additional changes made to the chassis, electronic management systems and the brake system.
BMW also added that they will be offering a second armoured version of the X5 with a lower protection level of VR4 that is designed to “provide protection against general street crime”. Further details of this variant will be revealed later in Moscow.
