The next generation of the WRX could be appearing as an entirely separate model from the Impreza range on which it is currently based on. Expected to be introduced in 2014, both the WRX and the Impreza will be based on the same platform but with enough changes to the WRX model to warrant it being labeled a separate model.
One of the biggest changes to the proposed WRX model will be a shorter wheelbase that will significantly improve handling.
A source in Subaru whispers to Motor Trend, “The first thing you must understand about our all-new WRX is that we have developed it from the ground up to win in motorsports events. That's why we have focused so heavily on weight issues, not to mention a shorter wheelbase that permits faster, more precise turn-in. Marry that to our proven AWD system, and we think we have a winner.”
Of course, an STI variant of the WRX will also be on hand and will serve as the basis for a future World Rally Championship (WRC) car, a competition Subaru are planning to return to.
The Subaru WRX, should it materialise, will likely be powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged boxer mill with 266hp. The report also indicated that Subaru might be working on a twin-charged setup with a supercharger thrown in as well. The WRX STI will come with the same 1.6-liter boxer engine but power will be dialed up to around the 300hp mark.
