Mr Jason Lai Tsuen Yung, a consulting analyst from Johor and Ms Josephine Lee Siok Kin, a bank clerk from Sarawak have both beaten stiff competition from across Malaysia to be crowned the country’s smartest FuelSavers.

The pair will now compete head on with other Asian drivers at the inaugural Shell Eco-marathon Asia at the Sepang International Circuit on 8th and 9th July, to vie for the title of Asia’s Smartest FuelSaver and winning a new fuel-efficient car.

The Asia’s Smartest Fuelsaver Challenge is one of many initiatives undertaken by Shell as part of its ongoing commitment to educate motoring communities around Asia to be more fuel efficient and savvy.

In Malaysia, Shell's latest breakthrough fuel, Shell FuelSave 95 was first introduced back in October 2009. Soon after, Shell began a nationwide Smartest FuelSavers Challenge, which saw contestants across the country competing against each other, with the goal was to discover who could travel the furthest using one litre of Shell FuelSave. Lai and Lee emerged as national champions and will represent Malaysia in the Asian leg of this ultimate test of fuel saving ability and knowledge.

“The first ever Shell Eco-marathon in Asia promises to be the ultimate test of fuel efficient driving for the students who take part. Against this backdrop, Shell Retail will be holding the Asia’s Smartest FuelSaver Challenge, in which our contestants will show just how far a regular motorist can go on a single litre of fuel in an ordinary road car,” said En Azman Ismail, Managing Director of Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd.

“Team Malaysia has collectively clocked in an average of 27.3 kilometres on just 1 litre of Shell FuelSave during the National Finals. An amazing feat that we believe will be echoed in the upcoming Asia’s Smartest Driver’s Challenge further testifying that – Malaysia Boleh!”, he further added.

To prepare for the challenge, Lai and Lee will be guided through a Shell FuelSave Academy featuring intensive theoretical and practical training by a host of international fuel efficiency experts including Fuel Economy Guinness World Record holders, John and Helen Taylor. The programme will allow them to learn more about how to save fuel and inspire other Malaysian drivers to do the same.

“After championing the Shell 1 Litre Challenge in Germany and Malaysia in 2009, I am thrilled to be supporting Team Malaysia as they compete against the best of the best at this year’s Asia’s Smartest FuelSaver Challenge”, said En Fahrin Ahmad, Malaysia’s favourite TV Host / Actor / Model, who is also Shell Malaysia’s FuelSave Ambassador.

For more than 20 years, Shell has held annual Eco-marathons in Europe and the USA. For the first time ever, this year’s event is coming to Asia, and Malaysia will be playing host to the 83 student teams from 11 countries, who will compete to build and design cars to go as far as possible using the least amount of fuel.

Concurrently, the Asia’s Smartest Driver Challenge will be held during the Shell Eco-marathon Asia and follows an identical competition held in Europe that was won by Gunther Grossler, a driving instructor from Germany who drove 22.75km on a single litre of fuel.
