Flash floods hit areas in KL

KUALA LUMPUR: Several areas in and around the city were hit by flash floods with Dataran Merdeka being the worst-hit area during a three-hour downpour last night.
Two people were admitted to the hospital after they were pinned down by a fallen tree.
At the height of the downpour, many low-lying areas were submerged in water – between one and two metres. Traffic came to a standstill in the city.

A City Hall operations centre spokesman said the areas badly affected were those along Jalan Raja, Jalan Tun Perak, Jalan Melaka, Jalan Dang Wangi, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Petaling Street, Jalan Munsyi Abdullah, Jalan Yap Kwan Seng, Taman Hillview, Setapak, Segambut and Sentul Pasar Dalam.
Areas along Jalan Travers, Jalan Bangsar, Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Jalan Semantan and Jalan Tun Razak were also affected.
Several hotel basement car parks were flooded.

Vehicles parked at the Dataran Merdeka basement car park were submerged in floodwaters which reached up to its ceiling after the nearby Sungai Gombak overflowed its banks.
At one point, Dataran Merdeka looked like a padi field while Jalan Raja, which runs between Dataran Merdeka and the Sultan Abdul Samad building, was submerged in one-metre deep floodwaters.

There was bumper-to-bumper traffic along Lebuhraya Mahameru near the exit to Jalan Parlimen and near Bukit Tunku, Jalan Tun Razak near Bulatan Kg Pandan and Jalan Loke Yew.
A woman and her two children were pinned under a tree after it fell on them at the St Mary's Anglican Cathedral near Dataran Merdeka.

Kamala Devi, 46, had a broken right leg and injuries to the neck. Her daughter S. Thanaletchumy, 20, had bruises on the body while her son S. Thanaraj, six, escaped unhurt.
Speaking to reporters later, her husband, Royal Selangor Club chief security officer L. Selvarajah, 48, said his family was waiting near their car while he went to assess the flood situation.

City Hall and Fire and Rescue Department officials got the three out within 30 minutes. Two cars were also damaged when part of the tree landed on them.
DBKL officer Mohd Noor Razali, met at Dataran Merdeka, said waters began to rise at 6pm.
City Traffic chief Asst Comm Hamza Taib said no major accidents were reported during the downpour, adding that all manpower had been deployed to help out the DBKL officers to man traffic in the affected areas.

An affected motorist Johari Alias, 44, said that his car was damaged after it was submerged in waters reaching up to the vehicle's windows.
“I had parked my car behind the courts and was at the Central Market. When I noticed the Sungai Gombak overflowing its banks, I rushed to my car but it was too late,'' said the artist.
Floods have hit the Dataran Merdeka car park several times over the years.

In 2002 and 2003, similar floods due to heavy rain and overflowing of the Sungai Gombak nearby had left the vehicles of many motorists damaged after the car park was submerged in floodwaters right till the ceiling.

oh.. u beat me to it

looks like the SMART highway is only for show? Tot itz supposed to minimise flash flood?

heard fr some ppl whom reads chinese newsppaper, the govt (Prob Semi Value) claimed that the SMART tunnel's flash flood sys isn't working yet. Will only work after the toll starts.

so he'z trying to say that the water need to pay toll to get diverted as well?! pengsan...

Ju, according to Authority, water tunnel is not yet functioning, the construction only finish at August.

have just emailed my friends working nearby..
better ask them to buy additional insurance policy.

LOL @ Visit Malaysia 2007

Ha! I was around there at 9pm. Lets just say the river swelled so bad that water actually backflowed back to the drains abd cause the floods. If anyone saw the river, damn scared liao. The water level just less than 1 feet nearing the roadside. And it is always less than 15 feet at normal days.

so can we sue the City Council for property damage due to poor drainage system and improper planning of flood water dissipation system?

dunnno, last year no one did that...
not that I known of.....any lawyer in this forum??

Tohson, don't think you can do that. Remember the flash flood at 2002/2003?
Dataran Merdeka undergroup parking is full of Lawyer's and Judge's luxury car. And the action they took (to Auto Park and DBKL) didn't bring any result. So we can forget about that.

can't sue, remember the last time the dataran merdeka carpark got flooded, a bunch of lawyers (including sankaran nair, anwar's lawyer at that time in his case) and a bunch of other high profile lawyers wanted to sue but coundn't find a case.
the SMART tunnel so far is a complete joke. 1 day after KL city was flooded and caused millions of RM in property and vehicle damage, the minister comes out in the newspaper announcing the toll rate. after spending billions in the contruction of the tunnel, KL city is still facing floods like last nite, which brings to an interesting suggestion that the floods this time round were made worse by contruction debris FROM the freaking tunnel.
Isn't this all too familiar, didn't we the rakyat have already envisoned such events when the tunnel idea was 1st implemented ???? YES we did.
I'll happily eat my words IF the tunnel actually works in the future. I was in the city 10 mins after the rain stopped and what i witnessed was complete mayhem. jam everywhere and water everywhere. SUngai Gombak (beside old railway station) was so intense that it was scary enuf to be jst looking at it. it was like the Colorado rapids for heavens sake !!

bring this in, sure sell like hot cake.

but if u parked in dataran merdeka....
it's still going to be squashed eventhou it floats.
haha

hahahah, yea lor, somemore no roof...even though floats but got big hole for water to go in

so what? boycott SMART tunnel so that whoever built it goes bankrupt? this might teach the government and cronies companies the power of people. teach them to do it for the people, from the people, not their bank accounts!

Thank god cancel my shopping at Kl yesterday...but pity the victim and zth members at there...
added...
If SMART have mention tht they have finish the construction...why they didnt use it since yesterday is a critical basis??Need to start it after we pay money??
WTF??? money important thn Malaysia citizen life?? thanks god no one pass away...
Or just a flower pot onli...can show to us tht we didnt spend money on income tax wrongly even wanna to pay toll on it...

they claimed that it isn't finish construction yet, as mentioned by other members..

doink... must be just another cover line for a failed project.

SMART is just another white elephant of which SV must have some shares in it. Why? He promoted the tunnel as a salesman and kept saying toll today is RM 2 and will increase in 3 years plus no G-man support n blah, blah...

Like hell anyone is going to believe him. What a joke!

I bet even after completing 200 ponds, there will still be flooding probs in KL.
