Would like to know how to tell between a NA, Turbo & Super Charged Engine just by looking at the engine bay?

I know the Turbo looks abit like a snail but normally how to spot a Turbo Charger & Super Charger/Kompressor?

Some picture to highlight the parts would be nice.

Simple only bro, just google NA ( naturally aspirated), Turbocharged/supercharged engines and you'l be able to figure out. Try HowStuffWorks - Learn How Everything Works! to know in detail.

veilsideboyz bro sorry to say this but when someone is asking something very minute its best not to let them down. Coz i myself am a noob and i do ask stuff that does not make sense but heck i am here to lean and meet friendly sifu/otai's :wavey:

Can someone have the courtesy of posting few engine bays with Turbo & Supercharger? I know how Turbo looks like but where is it usually mounted? I have never seen a Supercharger nor a Twin Turbo, and how the chain connecting to the engine looks like.

Actually I don't think Turbo car always have Psh Psh sound, that's something to do with throttle. Turbo sound i think you hear air sucking sound more like whistle?

yes, turbo sound is actually the sucking sound u hear when driving, same like a supercharger car that sounded quite similarly. as for T/c is the ssssssss sound but the icon of a turbocharged car is the blowoff sound which sounded like sneeze. u can always google it for images. here's some pics as extra and as present to you...^_^ maybe u can begin ur search by looking at the pics i posted....really hoped u got to know what u want...the pics i posted earlier (the colourful pic) already got the answer for u actually....the snail a.k.a turbo turbine is installed near the intake then the air sucked by the snail is then cooled in the intercooler...the air will then be sent to the engine...

Ehh....??:confused::confused: Yameh..? My my car got no Psss psss psss sound...? My friend just bought an Original EVO 9. Stock condition also no Pss psss pss sound woh...

So, does that mean EVO 9 no turbo kah..? Maybe he kena cheated. Hahahaha....

Ok, potato. Explanation goes like this.

For turbo charger, the turbo is located after the exhaust manifold. Some car's engine have exhaust manifold in the front, some at the back some sideway... It all depends on how the engine orientation is.

Supercharger, could also looks like a snail. or part of the intake manifold. most of the time located at the timing belt side, cause it is crank driven. So, it has to be a rotating device driven by one of the belts at the timing belt/chain side of the engine. At the same time it's also located in between the intake manifold of the engine and the air intake filter(or MAF). Note that mechanical MAF is also a rotating device between Filter and Intake manifold. But it's not driven by belt... Most of the time, exhaust manifold goes directly to mid/rear muffler or cat con.

NA. Normal la. When u see exhaust manifold goes directly to cat con/mid/rear muffler. And have no rotating device driven by crank that is connected between intake manifold & MAF/Air intake filter, then that's an NA.

So, Got Pss pss... not necessary turbo. Supercharge also can have Pss pss... NA also can have Pss Pss... can buy from brother's liao ma... Hhehehe...

Pss psss sound from throttle, better throw that throttle away and replace a new one. that's BOV when presure release due to close throttle. Make some effort and google around. It'll make more sense when ppl explains.

oppss..sorry bro
When you saw intercooler at the bumper there sure is TURBO..
That day I saw a kancil at Sunway. Front mounted IC. Open the bonet, it's not connected. That day i saw a Subaru and RX-7 racing. both can't see intercooler. Open the hood only can la... one top mount, one is V mount. Open the hood sure can see. But has to be connected.

When you heard the sound same as airplane (fear sound) sure is S/C..
That day, my cousin fetch me with her C200 Kompressor. No such sound also.

when you heard NTG...juz a exhaust sound sure is N/A...
hope can help you !
Cheers! :five:
Sounds like my car geh..?

Sorry veilsideboyz, just kidding. Just trying to explain. Hope u won;t mind.

Ok, potato, hope u'll get what i mean.

Speed2horizon is right, a detailed explanation...good video from Veilsideboyz as well ^_^but to know if its t/c or s/c or N/A just by looking at the engine bay as the topic says is actually really easy...its all a matter of knowing the kits and some studies of cars...sometimes you can be confused by some cars which have a turbo or super charger but doesnt look and sound like how ppl tell you about them....also all the sound nonsense we tell you is just for fun hehehe...its actually Malaysia t/c, s/c icon hahahahaha...young guys street racer look alike sure like the sound so simply can spot their t/c and s/c but not all ppl will like the sound....the main turbo and super charger function is to add and increase boost, increase boost means better acceleration, not to make car sound like airplane ahhahahaaha ^_^ i myself prefer N/A....without the acting BOV from brothers which is really not necessary....turbo or super chargers in some cars will have no airplane sound such as the airtrek turbo, evo, benz kompressor and more...that is explained clearly by Speed2horizon kor kor as well ^_^...just have to google around for it...also visit and search turbo or super charger at wikipedia.com...there mr potato can oso know how a turbo and super charger functions.

In other words, forced induction is just to increase the compression ratio/capacity in a more thermodynamic way when extra hp is required due to load increment.

wei, kor kor... I damn 7 young one u know...

Am curious, force induction compresses air, but then again force induction engine usually have lower compression ratio, doesn't both thing contradic each other since we compress the air but when it goes to engine it has be tuned to lower the compression to avoid knocking? Or are they two different things?
