MEDIA RELEASE

TUN MAHATHIR TO CHAUFFER DONORS AT RACERS FUND RAISING

In the aid of Tsunami victims, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will turn ‘chauffer’ at Sepang International Circuit’s (SIC) special event to raise funds for the disaster victims on Sunday (January 16) at the circuit.

The former Prime Minister and prime mover of Malaysian motorsports will chauffer nine of the highest bidders for a circuit experience around the 5.543-km Formula One circuit in a Porsche Cayenne at the Racers United in Aid of Tsunami Victims Fund event.

“Among the activities that we would be having at the event on Sunday is the taxi ride around the track. And, Tun Dr Mahathir has agreed to drive some of the guests in the name of charity,” says SIC General Manager Ahmad Mustafa.

Tun Dr Mahathir would be driving for three laps; carrying three passengers at a time for each of the lap in the Porsche Cayenne. For the taxi ride, members of the public are charged a minimum of RM50 and the top nine highest bidders get to sit in a special drive by the visionary leader. SIC is expecting a range of sportscars to participate, giving the public an opportunity to ride in some of the world’s fastest sportscars.

“We would like to thank Tun Dr Mahathir for supporting this event where all proceeds would be channeled to the Asian Tsunami Disaster Fund. And, this includes allowances promised to the marshals,” added Ahmad.

The event would be an extended Sunday Track Day programme where bikers would get to use the track for the morning session from 9am and the drivers taking their turns in the afternoon session from 2pm.

Tun Dr. Mahathir will be driving on the circuit at 4pm. A cheque presentation ceremony will be held at 4.30 pm at the Perdana Suite.

Bikers would be charged RM70 for machines below 250cc and RM100 for those above 250cc for a three-hour session and cars would be charged RM150 per car per driver.

In between these events, there would be special activities including the taxi rides, guided tour around the track, circuit experience, skill driving and lucky draws for the participants. A special drift challenge is also being organized at the car park area.

“We have invited Malaysia’s top racers like Karamjit Singh, Alex Yoong, Shahrol Yuzy and all of our Merdeka Millennium Endurance race and the Malaysian Super Series competitors as well as those who regularly come to our Sunday Track Day programmes.

“The event is also opened to all racing fans as well and the more we get for the fund, the better it will be. I must also thank the track marshals, who will be working voluntarily to support the programme,” added Ahmad.

It was to be dubbed the Jota but according to a FerrariChat...
