One-make races like the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo and the Ferrari Challenge are gaining popularity these days as it offers their wealthy clientele with the opportunity to get a taste of racing. Maserati also has their own one-make race called the Trofeo MC World Series but after six years running, the journey has come to an end.

The final race of the Trofeo MC World Series took place at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi last month and saw Frenchman Romain Monti taking the last ever title. Pietro Zumerle first took the championship back in 2010, followed by fellow countryman David Baldi in 2011. Renaud Kuppens then dominated the championship two years in a row before Swiss driver Mauro Calamia won the 2014 season.

The car they used in the race was the GranTurismo MC and it is closely based on the road-going GranTurismo. Being much lighter due to its stripped-out design, the car rolls with 444-horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque coming from the stock 4.7-liter V8 engine paired up to a sequential transmission.

However, Maserati fans should not be too upset on this news as this does not signify the brand’s departure from motorsports. As some of you might recall, Maserati has designed an FIA GT4-sped GranTurismo which allows private teams to field next year in various GT4 races around the world. Maserati will be providing technical support and replacement parts for the teams, using the experience gained during the Maserati Trofeo MC World Series.
