The dominance of Audi for the last few years that has seen the automaker notch up 10 wins doesn’t even come close to the manufacturer with the most number of wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Porsche, that has racked up a massive 16 victories.
Nonetheless, the last of those wins came way back in 1998 with the 911 GT1. Since then, the manufacturer hasn’t given much thought to the 24 hours endurance. Although its RS Spyder has done reasonably well in the LMP2 class and the privateer 911s have dominated the GT classes, Porsche themselves haven’t fielded a works team to compete in over a decade.
Audi however, is about to have its dominance challenged as Porsche has officially announced that it will be gunning for a win in the 2014 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Porsche will be putting together a new LMP1 car but details of the machine are scarce as of yet, understandably.
Furthermore, although Porsche and Audi fall under the same corporate umbrella, Audi have revealed that the decision for Porsche to enter Le Mans was done independently in-house by Porsche and Audi will be looking forward to the competition.
We can’t begin to explain how excited we are about Porsche jumping into the ring to take on the likes of Audi, Peugeot, Aston Martin and the other automakers at the Green Hell.
