You are talking about positive offset, right? and that is offset 40 and 48. For positive offset the larger the number the further in the rim, means when you fit your pair of rims of offset 40 and 48, the 40 will be further out. Adding 10mm spacer to the offset 40 makes that an offset 30 and not 50. If you were to add the spacer it will be to the rims that is offset 48, so it will become 38 which will be closer to the 40.Like I mentioned before try out without spacer, for FWD fit the 48 in front and 40 to the rear. If not good and need spacer, then fit 40 to the front and spacer with 48 to the rear.
