Read about it already.
It hangs on the top part of the window. Look at inset pic, shows a vent on top and in the middle is solar panel. The solar panel powers the fan to draws hot air out through the vent.
But if you have the rain guard plastic fitted will block the sun from solar panel.
Another problem they mention, if no rain guard plastic but have good tint will also block the sun from solar panel as the unit is inside in the car...:banghead:

it'll help only reduce the heat after parking under the sun faster so in a way it help reduce u'r a-cond heavy load @ start-up. btw, went to service my a-cond & the a-cond guys ask me to start @ lowest fan speed & bear a bit untill the internal heat is gone b4 make it to higher speed for that cooler air so that it'll make the compressor last longer.

By right, when the car is hot and parked under the sun for quite some time, we were advice not to get into the car 1st. Open all windows and doors and let all the heat out.

Even if we didnt do that, is not wise to switch on the air cond immediately after starting up the car.
1st it will shorten the lifespan of the compressor like u said, 2nd u can feel the air coming out from the air cond is real hot. And those air is kinda poisonous to breathe in from what I remember.

just to add, even if the interior air is cooler after windows & door open, the glass part of our car is still hot, so we still need to drive first to get it cooled down a bit 2 b4 switch to higher blower speed, usually i'll drive wit front window half down wit a-cond blowing @ lower speed.

The faster fan speed means you are circulating the hot air too and since air con have just been switched on the cooling fins are not cold yet. With faster fan speed the fins cannot get cool and can make compressor work more...

Another way to cool your hot car.

Turn on car, wind down passenger side window all the way down. Open and close your door 4-5 times. (make sure that the door you're opening and closing has its windows up!)

get back into car....nice and cool :D
