Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Race Director Phil Layton announced this morning that an accident involving a race official and one of the competitors has resulted in the death of the official.
Hill climb veteran official Henry Bresciani, 67, of Colorado Springs was killed by a vehicle driven by Jay Stewart, a veteran driver, at the top of Pikes Peak.
The accident occurred during the first practice session for the 83rd running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, scheduled for Saturday.
Race organizers called a 3 p.m. press conference at the Antlers World Arena, Interstate 25 and Circle Drive. No further information was immediately available. Details on the accident will be posted at gazette.com as they develop.
Saturday's race will mark a significant milestone: it’s the year cars and drivers begin to race down the mountain.
“The Race to the Clouds,” the second-oldest U.S. race (the Indianapolis 500 is the oldest), has Falken Tire as its title sponsor.
