It was never going to be an easy task but nobody could have anticipated the level of difficulty in traversing the very technical course with multiple surfaces as some of the region’s best drifters had to shift into overdrive to qualify for the top 32 of the Goodyear Formula Drift Malaysia 2010 at the center of the city in Dataran Merdeka.

The moment practice kicked off, it was plain to see that it was going to be a monumental task for the participants to familiarise themselves with the track and put in a solid run for qualifying to make the next round.

Due to the changing surfaces, with the track beginning on asphalt and then transitioning to a cobblestone surface with some unevenness throughout, it was probably the most challenging track on the Formula Drift calendar this year. Many of the drifters were having a hard time getting a good run in.

Nonetheless, some of the drifters managed to tame the course with ease. The Prince of Drift, Tengku Djan Ley, showed his vast experience by putting in a strong run during practice to set the pace. A number of the Thailand drifters also managed some impressive runs while billowing thick clouds of smoke from their machines.

As anticipated, with such a tight and technical course, there was bound to be a high number of incidents with the walls. Those hoping for a crash were not disappointed as some of the cars went in hard against the concrete barriers. Luckily, the roadside kerb helped a lot in reducing the damage from a straight on collision.

The biggest incident was perhaps the Toyota Altezza from Hong Kong, looking very well prepped with wide fenders and a chassis-mounted rear wing, spinning on the switch over to go in hard with its back against the barriers. Needless to say, it was the end for that chassis-mounted rear wing. A number of other drifters also had more than a close brush with the wall.

While the course was very intimidating, the drifters showed no fear in tackling it. All of them were flying in with some pretty extreme entry speeds and no number of slight bumps with the walls were going to stop them. Even if the bumper or fender got knocked a bit, they just kept on flooring it all the way to finish the course.

As qualifying begun, the atmosphere got a lot more tense as the drifters realise that they only had two runs to make it for the top 32 or it was an early shower and even a flight home for some.
https://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/278-600x398.jpg
Things were looking bleak for many of the drifters as the first round saw a high number of them score zeros from the judges, Ryan Sage, Andy Yen and Dai Yoshihara. Some of them were spinning out or just plain losing the momentum and losing the drift during the run.

Crowd favourite Djan set the pace with an excellent run to net a 71 on his first run while most of the other drifters were still clocking in scores lower than 50. Nonetheless, the Thai drifters then stepped up and put on a hell of a show to give Tengku Djan a run for his money although none of them could match his score.

That run put Djan in the driver’s seat for the top 32 and well on his way to winning the round and perhaps the overall championship, which he is currently leading now as well.
https://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/182-600x398.jpg
Then stepped up Thai drifter Kokae, a relative newcomer in the scene, having only started drifting about a year ago. He pushed his his Nissan Cefiro A31 to the limit as he put in a superb run to edge Djan into second spot. Kokae is definitely one of the drifters to look out for in today’s top 32 battle.

Japanese drifter Daigo Saito, driving under the Hong Kong Type-R Club banner for this round was behind the wheel of a Toyota Aristo. The experienced Jap managed to reign in the luxo-barge and bag a strong run to put him in the top five.

New Zealander Daynom Templeman took the top qualifying spot with a score of 91.7 on his final run. Second place went to Kokae, whose second run was enough to overcome Djan after the Malaysian went ahead of him with a better second run. Djan had to settle for third spot. He did however have the fastest entry speed for the day. Fourth place belonged to Daigo Saito with fifth going to Nattawoot Krerpradab.

Some opf the other notable drifters that qualified include local Mervyn Nakamura that got sixth, Tan tat Wei came in eighth, Japanese drifter Ryuji Miki qualified ninth, Thai drifter Non Saranon came in 12th, Goodyear Malaysia drifter Hanizam 'Loyai' Hamzah got 17th, behind him was Hong Kong drifter Charles Ng who is a regular on the Formula Drift USA circuit having won the Pro-Am title last year and Goodyear Malaysia drifter Michael Gan that got 23rd spot.

https://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/147-600x398.jpg
Some of the drifters were unfortunate enough to not get a proper run in, netting zeros on both runs. As the top 32 kicks off today with tsuiso battles, it would appear that the track is still the drifter’s number one opponent.
