Apparently Subaru has high hopes of their all-new WRX STI as even before the car hits the market, they had recently announced that they will be lining up the car as an entry in the punishing Nurburgring 24-Hour endurance race.
With the production/road version scheduled to make its debut at the Detroit Motor Show, the race version of this anticipated machine has already made its appearance at the recently concluded Tokyo Auto Salon.
Engineers from both Subaru an STI have worked tirelessly in developing the race car. Designed to compete in the SP3T class which allows production-based vehicles with turbocharged engine displacing between 1.6 – 2.0 liters, the WRX STI racer will feature the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine as its power plant.
Similar to 2013, Hideharu Tatsumi will be the team manager and also overseeing the development of the race car. The drivers set to tame this wild racer are Toshihiro Yoshida and Kouta Sasaki from Japan, plus two more drivers from Europe will be joining them.
With considerable success at the 24-H Nurburgring in recent years, Subaru is aiming for their third class victory in 2014. The event, including practice and qualifying, will take place from June 19 – 22.
