McLaren Eyeing to Replace Windshield Wipers with Sound Waves?

During an episode of Top Gear where the three chaps were having a road trip across Italy in supercars, Jeremy jokingly referred McLaren in being too meticulous (and boring) when making the MP4-12C and the Lamborghini Aventador is just perfect with the madness it receives. But what amazes us really is that in the show, he did say that the guys at Lamborghini will think of cooler ways to keep water off the windshield by using “lasers”; but it seems that McLaren is closer in achieving that unique method.

Although it does not necessarily involve lasers of any kind, the brilliant minds at McLaren seemed to be in a mission to get rid of the windshield wiper. In favour of a more high-tech solution in keeping droplets or debris off the windshield, the system they will be using is similar to what is installed on military jets where a high-frequency ultrasonic transducer will “create tiny vibrations on the windshield which would bounce off rain, insects and mud”.

Of course, we would not be seeing this technology to be on their road cars overnight, but it may reach the production lines as early as 2015. What do you think of this tech pursued by McLaren; is it a ground breaking feature that will leave other manufacturers behind, or is it just a tad too much to just keep the water off the windshield?
