The Audi TT may be the affordable sports car in Audi’s range of sports cars, but the R8 is a serious competitor to the likes of the Porsche 911, Ferrari 458 and even the Lamborghini Gallardo. Introduced back in mid 2007, the mighty Audi R8 has soldiered on for a solid seven years, with more than ten unique variants to choose from.
What the spyshots here suggests is that Audi seems to be prepping a final version Audi R8 to bid the mighty R8 farewell. The biggest hint of all is that huge wing at the rear end, much like limited run Audi R8 GT. Large rear wing aside, this mule/prototype also sports a much larger rear diffuser with revised front bumpers and side skirts. Even the front has scoops that is not found on the regular Audi R8 variants. Everything said, this mule is much like a tribute to the Audi R8 LMS ULTRA race car, a very potent race car from the guys at Ingolstadt.
Under the hood, expect to find the same 5.2L V10 that powers the older Audi R8 V10, but with more ponies on tap. Transmission choices would either be the seven speed dual clutch automatic, or if you must, a 6 speed stick shift.
Audi is clearly taking the footsteps of Mercedes Benz, who did a SLS AMG Final Edition to bid their SLS AMG farewell. Expect this R8 to debut later this year, with a new model (based on the Huracan, we hope), to debut next year.
