Another Green Supercar – The Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive

Going out on a hunt for a green, electric car never really sounds that exciting; especially because of the limited choice that one has in choosing one. Putting aside the G-Wiz, i-MiEV or the Leaf, the only available options that will wake up every morning and looking forward to drive on to are the Fisker Karma, Tesla Roadster, and the soon-to-come Audi R8 e-tron. Not enough? Then say hello to the latest addition into the EV family, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive.

Set to make its world premiere at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, the automotive community got the chance to have this first glance, thanks to a German publication that had leaked this set of photos. The SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive is Mercedes’ second model in its range to bear the “Electric Drive” moniker, which will be seen on all battery-powered electric passenger cars from Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG and Smart.

With four electric motors placed close to the wheels, it has a combined output of 740-horsepower (552kW) and an impressive torque figure of 1,000Nm (737 lb-ft). These incredible figures instantly put the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive as the most powerful production AMG model of all time. Another impressive figure for this EV includes a 0-100 time in just 3.9 seconds, but like almost all the high-speed EVs, the top speed is electronically limited to only 250km/h.

The SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive’s first batch will begin as soon as July 2013, and this limited-run EV will start its price at €416,500 (RM 1.6 million); which is simply twice the price of what the petrol-slurping SLS AMG GT. If money is not a problem, which would you choose?
