Two New Lamborghini Models Confirmed For Next Year

Lamborghini is expected to release two new models next year and for those who have always wanted a rear wheel drive Lamborghini, your wishes may have been granted. De Telegraaf reported that Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann has confirmed not one, but two different rear wheel driven Lambo’s for ’09.

Our sources indicate a new generation Murcielago will be offered. Dubbed the LP640-2, it will feature 640hp from a mid-mounted longitudinal V12 powering the rear wheels. The “2” at the end of the moniker signifies two-wheel-drive, separating it from the current four-wheel-drive LP640-4. It may also be dubbed the SV for Super Veloce.

Next up will be a new Superleggera Gallardo LP560-2. It will also feature a longitudinal placed 560hp engine driving the rear wheels. The elimination of the AWD equipment should save quite a few kilos, allowing the Sant’Agata bulls to give the horses from Maranello a good run for their money. Expect to see them late next year, possible as 2010 models.

Finally!

This was imminent. Especially the Murcielago. I would however disagree that this will be a 'new generation' Murcielago. What it actually will be is the final iteration of the Murcielago before the completely new replacement model will be unveiled likely in 2010.

I have a feeling they use the 'SV' moniker for this final Murcie. The use of 2WD fits the bill.

Lambo 'post-Audi' resisted heavily the introduction of a 2WD version for road models. However all the racing Gallardo and Murcielago are 2WD due to regs. So it's inevitable for them to sell 2WD variant probably for race homologation.

4WD is one of the key selling point for Lambo. It differentiates them clearly from Ferrari. The other issue is that switching to 2WD does not save a hefty amount of weight at the front. The front drivetrain of Lambos is quite compact and only weighs at most 30-40kg extra. It does however improve front end corner turn-in but all that enormous Torque (more than in Ferraris) going to the rear will mean that this new Lambo will be a real beast and only experienced drivers will drive them near the limit.

Still very exciting model nonetheless

Because of the torque, do look back at the old Diablo SV. Most of the owners have a hard time controlling the car. Now they bring back the good old days? hahaha. Anyway though they removed the 4WD system, does the price get cheaper?

Probably more expensive as they will make it more exclusive. Lambo is very smart with their marketing now. The old Diablo SV was actually surpsingly cheaper than the VT(4WD) and sold very well. The SV was the with a lot of interior amenities removed and, shorter final drive, retuned suspension, repositioned air intake that gave extra hp at high speeds.

Most lambo buyers are wealthy people who buy them for the sense of occasion. Most are not professional drivers. It is not a car that demonstrates handling agility either simply because of its weight and girth. And so many owners crashed it. I have driven briefly a pre Audi Diablo VT and its not the easiest car to drive but boy it looked absolutely FANTASTIC! I'm a Lambo fan eversince!

Today, the Gallardo is more rewarding to drive in terms of handling. The murcie is still very good and will whack the Gallardo in a straight line. It's just not as agile because of size and weight. No murcie owner buys their car because of its handling anyway. For that they have the Porsche GT3 or even a Lotus in their big garage.

2WD lambo? remind me of old days of lambo. At least they don't continue of uncomfortable driving seat position and have to do reverse a lambo countach by sitting at the edge of the cockpit entering. 2WD lambo will give a thrill to driving experience in my opinion.

Yeah, the post Audi lambos have better seating position. Seating position in the Diablo I drove was quite uncomfortable. I still had to sit on the door sill to reverse the car. In teh Diablo SV the rear engine air intake completely blocked the rear windscreen which was useless to begin with anyway.

Current lambos have rear view cam to help in reversing the car. Otherwise drivers would have to sit on the door sill too.
