Back in 2001, VW presented its Microbus concept at the Geneva Motor Show. Many believed that it would see the light of day in 2005 as an attempt to revive the official flowerpower vehicle of the 60’s but that was before the US dollar took a plunge prompting VW boss Bernd Pischetsrieder to swing the axe on the concept.
Fast forward to 2008 and we now have a boring Routan to take over the job of transporting multiple people but it’s nowhere close to being the VW bus of the 60’s. A revival seemed hopeless – until now. Aussie paper, The Sydney Morning Herald reports that VW’s entertaining the possibility of a 21st-century Microbus built on the same platform as the new sedan. VW heads over at Germany have stated that the idea is a no-go but VW bosses over at the States suggested that a second vehicle production line at the Tennessee plant may be conceivable in the near future.
That doesn’t really say much but with support for the vee-dub building up, the US of A may just get the Microbus as a ADM unit only, which I feel is no fair because us Asians loved the Microbus as well and would also love to see its revival and introduction here in Asia. So for those of you who love and want to see the classic bus being revived, let your thoughts be known below, VW may just see demand rise, making it a viable project to pursue, it is all about the Benjamins anyway, so if there’s demand, then why not?
