The next generation BMW 5 series is due to be released in three years. It will be unveiled in 2010 and will go on sale in most world markets in 2011. So with that happening pretty soon (three years will be here before you know it) automotive media around the world are scrambling to come up with renderings or even spy shots of how the next generation 5-series will look like.
Here’s one done by artists at worldcarfans.com. Putting together CSI and Photoshop, they created an “agile rendering of the 5 series using the concept CS as a basis. The new 5 will maintain several existing technologies that include a further improved iDrive system, FlexRay processing, electro-magnetic handbrake, HUD, and Active Steering. The new 5 will also be bigger, wider and longer than the current generation.
BMWs new seven speed double clutch M-DCT gearbox will be offered as standard. The engine line up has been confirmed and will include the 3liter twin turbo petrol, 2 liter twin turbo diesel, the hybrid and the 4.4 liter twin turbo V8. Three brand new engines will also be offered for the 5-series, one of them is a new compact super diesel making well over 700Nm!
After the new 5 is revealed, tradition requires a new M5 to be revealed as well, so 2013 is the year the next generation M5 arrives and it will be pushing 600hp. Not much is known about a car that doesn’t exist yet but there is much debate over whether it will be force-fed or remain naturally aspirated. A spokesman mentioned that BMW has not ruled out using turbocharged M cars, “as long as they keep to the traditions of what an M car stands for”.
