The latest Porsche 911 has finally landed on our shores. Sime Darby Auto Performance (SDAP), the official importer of Porsche in Malaysia, unveiled the seventh-generation 911 to both media and Porsche customers last night at Sepang’s F1 circuit.

During the press conference, the folks from Porsche were quick to point out that almost 90 percent of all components in the 991 have been redesigned or redeveloped. Coupled together with an all-new lightweight body (aluminum-steel construction, 45kgs lighter than before), new suspension system, and further drive-train efficiencies, the end result is enhanced driving dynamics and up to 16 percent lower fuel consumption and emissions. It is also touted to be 14 seconds faster around the Nurburgring than its predecessor.

From this view, could you tell that this is the new 911?

The 991's rear is incredibly pretty in my opinion. What do you think?

Visually, the 991 maintains the signature 911 DNA and to the untrained eye, it would be difficult to tell the changes. The front of the 991 retains similar cues as the old model and it is the incredibly pretty rear that really wows me. The proportions of the 991 have grown; 100mm longer wheelbase, wider track width at front, overhangs shorter by 32mm front and 12mm rear, roofline lower by 7mm (6mm for Carrera S).

Not convinced?

Only the Carrera and Carrera S models were debuted last night. The standard Carrera’s powerplant has been downsized to a 3.4 litre mill (from 3.6 litre) that produces 350PS whilst the Carrera S maintains its 3.8 litre unit, now making a healthy 400PS. These numbers are up 5PS and 15PS respectively over the models that they replace. Torque figures remain unchanged on the standard Carrera but swells up by 15Nm on the Carrera S.

Interior is standard Porsche fare; if you're well acquainted with the Panamera and new Cayenne, you will not get lost in here.

Fifty lucky folks were given the opportunity to pootle around in Sepang.

Exhaust note sounds much better than the 997, thanks in part to the new Sound Symposer system.

Pricing has yet to be finalized, and SDAP says that it should be on paper within the next five to six weeks. In the meantime, only duty-free pricing was announced – RM430,000 for the Carrera and RM490,000 for the Carrera S. A four year warranty, service and maintenance comes as standard when you purchase either car.

We’ve not yet driven the Porsche 991 but we’re working hard to get our hands on one so that we can bring you a more detailed review. Stay tuned for more updates. In the meantime, you can view the pictures from last night (along with some press release images) here.
