Drifting might have exploded the world over but no matter how you go about it, the essence of it still emancipates from its spiritual home, The Land of the Rising Sun, Japan.

Movie-maker Luke Huxham has been putting together a series of videos, titled, Drift Colours, that aims to chronicle the spirit of drifting by going beneath the layer of worn asphalt, smoked rubber and exhaust fumes to get more intimate with the drivers and venues.

Nonetheless, don’t make the mistake of thinking this is a documentary with little or no drifting action. There’s plenty of it from the Matsuri at Ebisu a while back as well as short interviews with the drivers that participated.

Entering its third episode now, the first one was about the Ebisu circuit and all its courses. The second one went a little in depth by interviewing the drivers, from foreigners and locals to some of the staff even.

This brings us to the third episode that is all about Sumika Kubokawa, one of the most prolific female drifters and a member of the revered Team Orange. From the interview you can tell that Sumika is a very determined and passionate person hell-bent on making a name for herself in this male-dominated sport.

She’s strong-willed and has the skills as well, a potent package. Her favourite machine is the Nissan 180SX, of which she has gone through seven already at the ripe age of 27 years old. She goes on to describe how she came to know about drifting and her subsequent participation in it.

It’s a very interesting piece on a very interesting person that adds buckets of personality to the sport.
