Dear Brothers....

I am looking to purchase the complete gearset from a S80/Y80 JDM, GSR gearbox of ratios:

1st: 3.230
2nd: 1.900
3rd: 1.360
4th: 1.034
5th: 0.787
Reverse: 3.000
Final Drive: 4.400

into my current B16A gearbox. I have read about it on how the gear ratios of the S80 actually gives u better pull and acceleration than stock.

My question is have anyone installed such gearings as a good alternative to stock B16 ratios? Is it a good modification

I hope some bros here can enlighten me on my doubts...

thank u and have a nice day

The GSR 2nd is pretty heavy when coupled with a 4.4 and B16A, as it stands, even the stock 2.5 is moderately 'okay' with a 4.4. I think what you've read must be about a GSR gearbox with a 4.9FD

the GSR has a longer 2nd gear (you can get higher speed in 2nd gear than you would with a stock 2.5 ratio.) but that's if you have adequate torque in that rpm range. With a B16, I don't think so. :P

When you talk about gear ratios, you must know what max rpm you will shift at, and where is the peak torque, the point where the revs should drop to after each shift.

The GSR with a 4.9 will offer better pickup, but you'll need about 9-9.5K rpm to achieve the same speeds on a 4.4 FD. (Around there, I could whip out another calculation, but that's already mentioned in my other earlier posts.

gearing is about getting the balance of torque and speed right. if you have too little speed gain, wheelspin, too little torque with high gear like the 1.9 on the GSR, you'll take ages to get to that 8K rpm (even with a slightly higher top speed) after 1st gear.

For me, the 1st and 2nd gear of the Y21/Type R is the best with 4.4 or 4.5/4.6/4.7 and B16, unless you talk about a B20B that need to launch in 2nd gear to minimize wheelspin, then the gears would start at 2.5 at 1st (that's not a personal opinion, most aftermarket gear catalogues start from that number for their 1st gear, with some manufacturers offering 2.8/3.0 ratios.

hi bro...i actually read up the USDM GSR from 94-01,93-01 JDM SiR gearbox ratios....

i know it does not make much power in a b16..im actually on b20....but on stock gearings..so looking to see what are my best options for gearing based on a 20 lamppost run....

hope you can shed some information for me...i know of the frequent use of ATS 3/4/5 gearings etc....but as a noobie..me blur blur...

1st gear better go to 2.929/3.070 since u can get 70 km/h at 1st gear 8.5k
put in at 4.785 final drive and stock b18c gsr stock ratio its will good for u for 20 lamppost run

Well, the range of choices for 1st gear has always been 2.5-3.0, depending on what final drive you will run.

for a 20 lamppost run though, that would be half mile + right? or did they put lampposts really close together nowadays?

As such, wouldn't the concentration would be towards higher speed gain per gear, necessitating the need for a 4.2FD?

There's a reason why a 4.2FD exists for a honda, no? :P

Oh, one more thing about playing with 1st and 2nd ratios. They should be quite close in ratio together, or you jump out of vtec when you shift from 1st to 2nd.
