Last weekend was the KKS Autocross, Rd3. Entries consisted of a
mixture of Lotus Elises, Toyota MR2 & MRS, Honda Civic, Suzuki Swift
GTIs, a lone Subaru WRX, a Proton Satria. Turnout was not that
great, but the quality of the organization was excellent with the
most challenging course layout ever seen in Msia! If you can master
the layouts, you are more than ready for Proton's SSO courses.

There were 4 layouts, essentially 2 diff layouts with forward and
reverse runs. All the layouts had incorporated 180deg and 360 deg
turns, with the last 2 layouts which had 3 donuts (360deg) and 2x
180 degree (nicknamed 'yau char kuai') turns around a solitary pylon.

Timed runs were on average ranging from 73secs to 110secs per
layout, with the longer runs being very tiring, challenging and
demanding on the competitors cars and tires. Several cars were seen
with badly balding (some even can see the cords) tires nearing the
end of the event, sacrificing speed to save the tyres till the last
layout.

As per normal, key to getting a successful run was the course walk,
with getting everything down pat when the light turns GREEN, and the
timer starts.

Marcus Chye, driving a Lotus Elise, romped home as the winner again
(is this the 3rd time?), beating Ivan in his WRX. 3rd place winner
was Soo SK (eater-eg6), in his Honda Civic, quite a distance away
from Marcus.

Marcus Chye is clearly a talented driver, a Lotus Advanced Driving
Instructor, with runs that show that he is in a class of his own.

A bright spark for the day, was Dominic, a 16 year old, driving a
borrowed Lotus Elise, coming in 2nd in the Lotus category, learning
and progressively getting better on each run. Winner of the Lotus
category was Austin, clearly getting in the groove of things and
learning to push the sprightly Elise faster through the course than
Dominic.

Actually with 2 layouts and runs in both directions and with one practice run and two actual timed runs, competitors got 12 runs each on that day. One can understand why tyre cords were starting to show! Wish there were more Kancils and Protons there. Seems rather a shame that for all the effort put in to organise the event there were so few entries.

Let’s be honest shall we, we’ve all, at one time or another, wondered what a race car with no rulebook to reign it back would perform like. Luckily for us, renowned Formula One aerodynamicist Adrian Newey and the rest of the Red Bull Racing head honchos daydream too.

The end result would be the Red Bull X1, the brainchild of Newey, and being...
