you meant, it's better to use factory setting for vtec activation point....Agree with J101.
If you engage too early, the car will jerk a bit during switchover, as not enough volume passing true for the vtec duration.
if you engage it too late, then you will see a flat spot in torque.
Some of the VTEC controllers use knobs.

my engine is surprisingly resistant to knocking.. (O_o)
As for vtec point, better I show than say. I set it suprisingly close to stock, at 5400 rpm.
