Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) is previewing the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid after beginning to accept orders for the car a day before. The Ioniq Hybrid is being displayed at an event held at the Malaysia International Exhibition & Convention Centre (MIECC) starting from Nov 10 to Nov 13, 2016.
The eco-friendly car will be locally-assembled (CKD) in Kulim, Kedah, thus granting the government incentives for CKD energy-efficient vehicles (EEVs).
Exterior
Boasting a typical hybrid car silhouette, the Hyundai Ioniq is designed to manage airflow across its body through active and passive aerodynamic elements. Its active aero grille, wheel air curtains, rear spoiler and smooth underbody work to deliver a 0.24 coefficient of drag (Cd).
Wheels are 17-inch alloys wrapped in Michelin Primacy tyres.
Interior
Beneath the bodysheet, there’s an array of weight-saving measures which include aluminium bonnet and tailgate (-12.4kg), suspension parts (-12kg) and a cargo cover which is 25% lighter than on other Hyundai models. Built with 53.5% advanced-high-strength steel, the Ioniq construction is lightweight yet strong and agile.
The car took its green approach into the cabin and gets eco-friendly materials for some of its interior panels. Equipment for driving comfort includes touchscreen Audio Visual Navigator, dynamic reverse camera, Qi wireless smartphone charger and Vehicle Stability Management.
Engine
The Ioniq features what Hyundai claim as “world’s highest thermal efficiency of 40% for internal combustion engine”. The 1.6-litre Kappa GDI 4-cylinder direct-injection unit kicks out 103.5hp at 5,700rpm and 147Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. The internal combustion engine is mated to a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor - rated at 32kW (43hp) and 170Nm of torque – and a lithium-ion polymer battery. This gives the Ioniq a cumulative system output of 139hp and 265Nm.
Transmission is a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic, which is a unique point compared to boring old CVT units on Japanese hybrids. With selectable Sport or Eco modes, the transmission uses low-friction bearings and low-viscosity oil, thus having best-in-class transfer efficiency (according to Hyundai).
Safety
The Ioniq comes with passive and active safety kits such as 7 airbags (including driver’s knee airbag), Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking and Smart Cruise Control.
