After unveiling the new Huracan Spyder in Malaysia a few weeks ago, Lamborghini is ready to present to the world another new variant of their Baby Bull. No, it is not the Superleggera version just yet, but it is the new rear-wheel drive version of the Huracan and it will be making its world debut at the 2015 LA Auto Show on Wednesday.

A successor to the Gallardo LP 550-2, the rear-wheeled Huracan is designated the LP 580-2 which means the mid-mounted 5.2-liter naturally-aspirated V10 engine produces 30PS less than the AWD version. Sending all the power to the rear, it rolls with 580PS (572-horsepower) and 398 lb-ft of torque with 75-percent of that available from just 1,000rpm.

Using the same seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, zerotohundred takes only 3.4 seconds, 0.2 seconds slower than the AWD model. The top speed is rated at 320 km/h, and has a power-to-weight ratio of 2.4kg/hp compared to the LP 610-4’s 2.33kg/hp. That is right, with the AWD system out of the way, this Huracan weighs 1,389kg making it 33kg lighter.

Also implemented in the LP 580-2 is the cylinder deactivation technology where five of the ten cylinders will be deactivated when full engine capacity is not required. This tech reduces the fuel consumption to 11.9L/100km and the CO2 emissions to 278g/km.

Three driving modes are available: STRADA for daily use, SPORT for “emotional driving fun with slight oversteering behaviour”, and CORSA for maximum performance in track mode. Weight distribution is 40-percent at the front and 60-percent at the rear.

To differentiate the LP 580-2 with the LP 610-4, Lamborghini had given a slightly revised exterior where it now has large air intakes, channelling the cooling air and headwind to increase pressure on the front wheels. A spoiler lip at the rear also improves the airflow, working alongside the diffuser in the underbody.
