Technology takes us to extreme heights that we had never thought about. And while we are still digesting the fact that autonomous driving will soon be the way in the future, BMW amazes us even more by presenting the world’s first self-drifting car. Yes, you heard this right.

Unveiling this new technology at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the German car maker demonstrated this new autonomous driving system that is able to control the car even during wild oversteering. The soon-to-be-launched M235i coupe was used as the prototype to demonstrate this capability, which is a part of an on-going program BMW is still working on.

The state-of-the-art computer processing and the GPS used are almost like the ones used in the latest guided-missile systems. BMW’s autonomous driving-assistant system actively takes part in the driving process which includes operating the accelerator, steering and brakes.

The new ultra-sonic radar and 360-degree stereo camera technology also gives the BMW autonomous driving assistance the ability to change lanes to overtake slower vehicles and then pull back once the manoeuvre is completed.

Despite showing great potential and had already undergone over 9000 miles of rigorous testing on BMW’s headquarter roads in Munich, officials involved in the development say that current road worthiness laws still prohibits such features from making it into the production lines.
