Autocar Drives The Mclaren F1 GTR – The One That Won Le Mans

Autocar presenter Steve Sutcliffe has got to be one of the luckiest auto journalist around today. To add on to his already impressive list of “I’ve driven that”, he gets behind the wheel of a Mclaren F1. But not any Mclaren F1 mind you, it is the Mclaren F1 GTR race car that won Le Mans and has been converted back for road use. Chassis number 10 currently belongs to Pink Floyd drummer and auto maniac Nick Mason.

So what’s the difference between a regular Mclaren F1 and a Mclaren F1 GTR? Weight. The GTR weighs in at only 950kg but retains the massive power of the BMW sourced engine. But thanks to the shorter race gearing, top speed has been lowered to 290km/h from the “regular” 386km/h. But who cares? Steve’s expression suggests that he definately doesn’t care. Enjoy the video, and the sound of the racer.

That is a fantastic car. When they say turning it to street ready car, means they just remove the splitters and some kits and just retain the wing? hahaha.

This is the first time i get so excited hearing a gearbox change!!! The sound is a cross between a whip and a light saber?!?!

Actually the Number 10 chassis has never raced the 24 hour of Le Mans, despite the fact the car was only used in pre-qualifying. You're confused with the #10 with the #01, the test and development #10 replaced the #01 (the real deal) which was retired immediately after the 1995 24 Hour of Le Mans and kept by the McLaren Cars. (I got the info from Wikipedia.

@thewheelman83: dude... please dont rely 100% on Wiki.. Wiki can be edited by anyone here in this world. So dont act like you know everything by just clicking on Wiki.

Anyways, this McLaren whether it is raced on Le Mans or not, is an ultimate driving machine. I think by far this is the most awesome car on my list. Definitely.

How come no roll cage?
Not that it really need one on the road.

I'm quite curious what's probably the most destroyed F1 to date?
Was checking the net was surprised to see the Ferrari Enzo have been take to the edge and beyond until the survival tub split into two...
Oh well.....
I still want the McLaren F1 anyday.
