Car horns. Love it or hate it, is undeniably an important part of our vehicle. It has also become part of the soundscape of many large and busy cities. Originally created for safety reasons, its usage has evolved and is used in many other ways these days. The main use of car horns are to caution others on the road of possible dangers.

Such dangers could be:

1. Another drivers lack of attention.

2. When making a turn that has visibility issues due to obstacles.

3. When driving on a road with many pedestrians.

Other uses may include:

1. To let someone know you've arrived without having to politely walk up to the door and knock.

2. To alert the person who double parked behind you.

3. To let the neighborhood know that you're coming for the bride.

4. To get the attention of a pretty lady on the sidewalk.

Agree or disagree on the other uses, you can't deny those are what car horns are often used for these days.

So, if you have ever been in a situation where you needed to use the horns, you know how important it is for it to be loud and attention grabbing, but not so loud that is will damage ones hearing. Ever been in a situation where you pressed the horn but the sound was less than impressive. Asthmatic to an extent. Look at the photo below to understand why.

That is how most factory horns look like. It is no wonder that they sometimes fail to get any attention at all.

Do you REALLY need horns to be loud?

A valid question really. It is without a doubt that car horns are one of the most annoying sounds to most of us. So why would you want a louder horn? Easy. The horn, if not misused is a safety tool. It is supposed to get attention. Having a horn that isn't loud enough is like having a knife that is not sharp. It won't work, and to a degree, would be useless.

Why do manufacturers equip such poor horns?

We don't know, but our guess would be cost. It isn't exactly the first thing you check when buying a car. I doubt most people even think of the horn until after the are driving it home. So its an easy target for cost cutting.

Aftermarket to the rescue (as usual).

Luckily for us, PIAA has some excellent horns that are within regulations, and are able to be installed easily in most cars.

Good day,

Another Opti-Coated BMW F10 520i since months back, this car condition is good. No major correction were carry out during preparation. Somehow, there is bird poop etched on the hood i didnt manage to remove cause its too deep. Without sacrificing too much of clear coat, i didnt go any further. Other panels such as doors, roof, rear bonnet were polished and finished with OHP. Finishing was done with Flex that i borrowed from...
