There is a collar between each gears 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and R. Attached to each collar is a shift rod, attached to the gear selector fork, attached to the gear shift knob.
If you're applying excessive force to the shift rod without depressing the clutch pedal, you might damage bearings attached to the centre of each collar or the collars themselves.
Not a problem, unless if u force it when it is abit hard to engage.. Reason u need the clutch is to break the engine power from the gearbox.. then when u shift gear, the synromesh will adapt/adjust to the speed of the gear u r shifting to and when the speed is similar.. wallah, it is engaged.. When engine not running, u wont need clutch already as the gears are not spinning but sometime the syncromesh might be abit misalign so abit hard to engage.. if u force it then might coz some damage loh..
Yeah sometimes can feel the gears misaligned so hard to engage when clutch isn't depressed. you mean like that it's very damaging to the synchro is it?
