Nick Heidfeld has been tasked with filling in the driver's seat that is now vacant at Renault-Lotus GP following Robert Kubica's critical injuries sustained in a crash at an Italian Rally that has ruled him out for the beginning of the season.
Filling in for drivers mid-season has become something of a specialty for Heidfeld, having been called back to Sauber after Pedro de la Rosa wasn't cutting it last season. He has also been selected by Pirelli to conduct testing on their new Formula One tyres for this season.
Heidfeld and Kubica were previously teammates at Suber for several years. Following testing at Jerez, Spain recently, Renault-Lotus GP announced Heidfel as the replacement driver until Kubica has fully recovered and is able to return to racing. In being selected to take Kubica's seat, Heidfeld edged out Bruno Senna and Romain Grosjean, both contracted drivers on the Renault-Lotus GP roster.
Lotus-Renault GP will be the fifth team that Heidfeld has raced for, after stints at Prost, Sauber, Jordan and Williams, not including his time serving as a test driver at McLaren and Mercedes GP. This marks eleven consecutive years that the German has been on the grid since his 2000 debut at the Australian Grand Prix.
