The Prince of Drift, Tengku Djan Ley, showed his vast experience by putting in a strong run during practice to set the pace. A number of the Thailand drifters also managed some impressive runs while billowing thick clouds of smoke from their machines.https://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/329-600x398.jpgAs anticipated, with such a tight and technical course, there was bound to be a high number of incidents with the walls. Those hoping for a crash were not disappointed as some of the cars went in hard against the concrete barriers. Luckily, the roadside kerb helped a lot in reducing the damage from a straight on collision.https://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/134.jpghttps://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/300-600x398.jpgThe biggest incident was perhaps the Toyota Altezza from Hong Kong, looking very well prepped with wide fenders and a chassis-mounted rear wing, spinning on the switch over to go in hard with its back against the barriers. Needless to say, it was the end for that chassis-mounted rear wing. All of them were flying in with some pretty extreme entry speeds and no number of slight bumps with the walls were going to stop them. Even if the bumper or fender got knocked a bit, they just kept on flooring it all the way to finish the course.https://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/292-600x398.jpgAs qualifying begun, the atmosphere got a lot more tense as the drifters realise that they only had two runs to make it for the top 32 or it was an early shower and even a flight home for some.https://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/278-600x398.jpgThings were looking bleak for many of the drifters as the first round saw a high number of them score zeros from the judges, Ryan Sage, Andy Yen and Dai Yoshihara. Some of them were spinning out or just plain losing the momentum and losing the drift during the run.https://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/116-600x398.jpghttps://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/224-600x398.jpgCrowd favourite Djan set the pace with an excellent run to net a 71 on his first run while most of the other drifters were still clocking in scores lower than 50. He pushed his his Nissan Cefiro A31 to the limit as he put in a superb run to edge Djan into second spot. The experienced Jap managed to reign in the luxo-barge and bag a strong run to put him in the top five.https://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/163-600x398.jpgNew Zealander Daynom Templeman took the top qualifying spot with a score of 91.7 on his final run. Second place went to Kokae, whose second run was enough to overcome Djan after the Malaysian went ahead of him with a better second run. Djan had to settle for third spot. He did however have the fastest entry speed for the day.
