FAQ:

Question:
How does the E-GPS work?

Answer:
It uses satellites to determine where you are and where you're going. You enter the address of your destination and your E-GPS will guide you there from your current location. A map of the route will appear on a display screen and E-GPS 'talks' to you, narrating the next turn on the map, and the distance to the next turn. If you deviate from the proposed route along the way, the E-GPS’s system will re-configure the route for you. Wherever you are, as long as there's a road, Gophers will guide you to your destination.

Question:
What is the E-GPS Navigation System or Portable Navigation System?

Answer:
E-GPS navigation device guides you on how to get from one place to another when you’re driving. It is a portable unit that can be mounted on the windscreen or dashboard of your car or hand held (but only if you're a passenger!). No permanent installation is required.

Question:
What are the benefits of a navigation system?

Answer:
In a word: fun. When you're using a navigation system to guide you around a new city, you won't worry about getting lost, which frees you up to enjoy your trip. You'll also be able to use your navigation system to find fun destinations, like restaurants, hotels, and tourist attractions, and useful destinations, like petrol stations, banks, and nearest parking. You'll get plenty out of a navigation system when you use it in your hometown, too. You can program multiple destinations, so you can save time when running errands by finding the most efficient routes between them. E-GPS can assist you to look for alternative routes and shortcuts to avoid traffic jams.

Question:
How does it know where I am?
Answer:
A navigation system uses two things to track your location and your destination:
- GPS (Global Positioning System): your navigation unit communicates with at least three GPS satellites simultaneously through the built-in or optional external antenna to determine your position.

Comprehensive road maps and software: Updated maps are provided, sourced from Malfreemaps - Papago. Collectively, these sets of maps give you the widest and most comprehensive coverage of the whole of Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

- Major roads, county roads, city streets, and important points of interest (including restaurants and hotels). All these data is preloaded in your E-GPS and you can get access to updates at regular intervals.

The navigation system determines your position by comparing the information it receives from the GPS satellites to its road map information, and then calculates the best route to your destination.

Question:
How do I tell it where I want to go?

Answer:
E-GPS feature an on-screen interface that lets you enter your destination. Most often, you'll simply select the city you're driving to, then type in a specific street address. E-GPS makes this easier by using "predictive text" — offering suggestions after only a few letters, so you usually won't have to type in entire city and street names.

You'll also have the option of selecting an intersection or choosing to go to the "city center" of given town or suburb, or ‘taman’, and even finding the nearest petrol station or restaurant when you need a pit stop!

Your destination options also include specific points of interest. You can choose a specific point before you leave, or find a point of interest along the way. Points of interest include restaurants, hotels, banks, petrol stations, government buildings etc.

Question:
How accurate are these systems?

Answer:
E-GPS Navigation systems are very accurate. The navigation device constantly recalculates your position, and accuracy is usually within 10m with clear GPS signals.

Processors for both the GPS receiver and for the antenna help the system keep locked onto the satellite signal, and translate the information quickly to keep track of your position as you're driving.

Question:
What kinds of directions do the voice prompts give me?

Answer:
The voice output provides information on how far you must travel until your next route change, and gives spoken driving instructions — these commands mirror the route indicators on your navigation screen.

Question:
Does the device have maps for the whole of Malaysia and Singapore?

Answer:
Yes, It comes preloaded with maps of the whole Peninsular and East Malaysia. The map of Singapore is also available.

Question:
How do I input the addresses?

Answer:
Using the touch screen that has short cuts for typing numbers and names.

Question:
Can I update my maps?

Answer:
E-GPS allows you to update the maps on your system, loading new ones into the memory. Map updates are released periodically and reflect the latest map information available.

Question:
How much does an E-GPS cost?
Answer:
E-GPS is sold at attractive recommended retail price of RM388.00 for 4GB Edition and RM368.00 for 2GB Edition.

Question:
How much is the subscription fee?

Answer:
There is no subscription fee! E-GPS works straight out of the box. Map updates will be available for download from www.malfreemaps.com and will be free to all users.

Question:
I have V-COOL tint on my front windscreen. Will it affect the satellite signals?

Answer:
Satellite signals cannot pass through solid or metallic objects; hence no GPS device will work in a tunnel or basement. A metalized window tint film (e.g V-Cool) does reduce signal strength, and may slow the performance of a GPS device. The E-GPS has been calibrated to work with most windscreen tints.

Question:
How do I get my E-GPS maps updated? When is the next update?

Answer:
E-GPS’s map updates can be downloaded from www.malfreemaps.com. We will publish precise directions when the next update is made available (3 months).

Question:
I'm going to drive from Penang to Singapore. When do I have to switch the maps?

Answer:
You will have to switch the maps when you cross the border ( best place is in between the immigration checkpoints of the two countries )

Question:
My GPS seems to take a long time to get GPS signals.

Answer:
The ideal conditions to get a fast GPS fix (on your location) are:

1) The GPS device has a clear view to the sky (i.e outdoors)
2) There is no overhead obtructions (roof, tall buildings, basements etc)
3) You remain stationary
4) No metallic window tinting (e.g V-Cool)

In ideal conditions the GPS unit should get a GPS fix within 45 seconds.
