Buying A Skyline!

Depends... I would say it's pretty expensive. You touch one thing, you'll have to get that and that and that and that... Ori stuffs would be expensive.

Can't really tell dude. We don't know what you want for your car. Performance? Accessories? External? Internal?

Is skyline maintenance cheap for its sports car range...What is the average spending amount etc...Pls....??? Thx in advance:itsme:
waterpump: rm200
timing belt: oem less than rm200, aftermarket around rm500-900(power, toda, hks)
brake pads: skyline owners rarely use oem pads, usually aftermarket in the range of rm300-500 for entry level performance pads(endless pads work wonders on stock skyline brake system)
rotors: seldom kong but aftermarket start from rm1200 (endless or pmu)
clutch: aftermarket used around rm1200 for twin plate, new around rm3500 n beyond (hks,os, orc)
engine oil: usually in the region of rm300 for good brand (use 6 liters)
tranny oil: rm160 for motul (2liters)
diff oil: rm180 for kaaz (2 liters but usually will have extra)
plugs: oem replacement around rm90(BKR6EGP), aftermarket iridium start from rm200
oil filter:ori nissan around rm20-25

basically its the same as any rear wheel drive sports/performance cars. if compared to toyota, nissan's wear n tear parts are significantly cheaper n easier to source.

Performance car means performance parts. Cheap knock off oil filters and engine oils will not do. Be ready to fork out quite a bit for these things. Minyak Cap Buruh will not do... LOL just kidding.

And NISMO Coppermix twin plate will cost you RM6000. OEM clutch doesn't last long.

Ill tell you hows it to own a Skyline.
Ive own the car for 3 years and clocked 26,000km.
So far ive spent +/- RM 120,000.00 on maintenance and mods.
I think most of the skyline owners here have spent more or less than what ive mentioned.

So ask yourself this, to go all out or save the cash. You will spend twice the amount of your car purchased price.

correction: Rb25 use 5 liters of engine oil (4.5 liters to be exact). the engine i'm using now use 6 liters of engine oil:thefinger:

When you ask how much it costs to maintain a Skyline and what it takes to mod one, well I can only ask “How long is a piece of string?” My mechanic when I was in Perth a few years ago, Ant (Anthony Scali) owned the R32GTR with the plates ND4SPD (featured in Hypertune ages ago) had 899hp and he used $4 plugs just to prove that it’ll work just as well as expensive HKS ones.

Some people can keep the car stock forever and maintenance would probably cost them slightly more than what an average car would. Some are more extreme and I’m not so sure if I’m yet to fall into this category but I think I’m getting there unfortunately. I bought my 34GTR about 18 months ago and it came from Japan with 17,000kms and numerous modifications: Power-FC, Apexi N1 suspension, Apexi turbos, Kakimoto exhaust, ORC clutch, Apexi air filters, etc. Basically the car was complete without anything left to spend. However, I’m a ‘built not bought’ guy so I replaced every single thing on the car with the exception of the carbon fibre GT wing (not sure what brand it is) and the TE37s cause they were the forged magnesium ones.

So fast forward to today and I’ve managed to fool myself into the doing the following:

AUDIO SYSTEM

So am I done yet? I guess I’m nearly there. Currently running in the new engine and once I’ve gotten about 3,000kms on it I’m putting in a Motec M800, Motec SDL, HKS triple plate, twin external Bosch 044 fuel pumps with surge tank (bye bye audio) and twin HKS GT2835s. Sometimes I feel like selling it but when I look back at all receipts it’s best to just keep it cause I’ll lose so much given current market. Do I regret it? Absolutely not! Ask me about my STI and see what answer you get!

Hey Pimpin ... since you've stated it ... What you feel towards your STI?

Dude,

I find that remark highly insulting towards Russell and belittles the amount of anguish he has gone through these past few weeks.

As for my ride, well if someone wants to steal it then there's not much I can do about it - Russ had his taken from his own home in broad daylight. At the end of the day, it's just a car. No point living in fear, hiding your car, etc.

i think what slide was trying to point out is the dangers of displaying such information, especially when it comes to mods list publicly. Thieves/hijackers will then know whats in the car and if its worth taking the risk.

However if you are okay with it, i guess no one else is in the position to say no

Yeah, I get your point and slide's too. I'm just saying that firstly, it could have been put in a nicer way so as not to offend Russ who is a good friend and active member in the Skyline community. I also agree that having mods listed etc will enable others to find out more about a certain car but then again, word of mouth travels just as fast especially in and around Sunway. And if we were to go by the logic of being secretive, then all car mags (Hypertune, etc) would cease to exist wouldn't they?

Just my POV, no harm done. :wavey:

No, just managed to escape getting married just yet.

Anyways, this topic has gone way way off.

How about we get back to helping our friend decide on his Skyline by discussing the pros and cons of owning one.

I'll start the ball rolling with fuel consumption.

How far do you guys travel daily (if its a daily driver) and what sort of mileage are you guys getting?

maybe its just me, but i interpreted ur mod list post as a brag. i agree to the magazine point u put across but thats a car magazine - they need stuff like that to generate revenue. imo, you didnt have to list everything cos the way i see it , it was quite unnecessary.

but i guess thats where u and me are different. if you are fine with it, then i rest my case.

/end rant

Actually in terms of expenditure, i really doubt the validity of some inputs here, to be honest, i dont think i have ever parked at jockey before, so the jockey expenses is definitely subjective. However i do choose places to go and park wisely.

RM1k per month on maintenance, RM1K on maintenance per month, where does the figure derive from?
Back then when i had my gtst, everyone told me gtr expenses are exorbitant, however comparing both, i find besides and if you are going to the path of mod expenses, [where certain parts are doubled ie frontpipes, intake ] i find maintaining a gtr is as good a gtst. My gtst back then could be a real fuel guzzler, but the fuel consumption as alot of ppl say gtr's is scary, but my gtst was the same as my friend's 300rwkw gtr

Well, its the same as maintaining a blog detailing every step of your car's mods I guess. In a way, you're probably right - it could be seen as bragging - but I guess I'm just proud of having gotten the car just the way I want it and its taken awhile. So what you see as bragging, I see a Skyline owner who loves his ride and is proud of it, not necessarily arrogant. But I guess we'll have to agree to disagree then. Peace

I really don't know where the RM1k figure comes from but for me jockey expenses are pretty much nil or if there are, too rare to count as a monthly expense. I don't drive daily but if I did, I'd use up a tank easily per day. The bulk of maintenance comes in the form of tolls, etc which is unavoidable regardless of what car you drive.

As for GTST and GTRs being nearly the same in terms of maintenance costs, speaking from experience, I have to agree that on a day to day basis its very close provided you don't mod or break anything. You could run a GTR cheaply and get away with it I reckon.

I can actually tell you how much it costs to run mine on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, half yearly and yearly basis since I'm anal and budget for these things in spreadsheets but I've shared enough I reckon for the day - used up my bragging rights already (j/k) :burnout:

Agreed, i really dont fork out 1k per month for my car, esp on jockeys to be significant enough to be included as expenses. I think im one of those running my car cheaply at the moment, no monstrous plan at all.
So to the future owner, like all threads, opinions are subjective and i suggest reading from other forums as well, such as sau , although its overseas, u might be able to gauge more or less the maintenance needed and frequency of it and whats really necessary.

u all really kaya la..how i wish i can have my dream car just like u all.. :banghead:

hello everyone..i'm also facing problem in deciding wether to buy this legendary car or not..
but for my case,my concern is the age of the car..

i'm looking for a 2nd hand gtr34 vspec (since the recond one is hard to find now + out of my budget range):bawling:..found few units but all of them are 1999 model..so they'll be 10 years old next year..

my question is will it have "age related" problem like rust, metal fatigue, etc etc just like other old cars normally facing??since this car is usually being used as 2nd/weekend car with pretty low mileage that's what make me wonder..do you guys having those problems with ur skyline so far??

i also have unpopular alternative options with much newer (but of course less powerful) cars, which i'll consider only as a last resort..
need advice from all of u otai here...
