hi guys... sorry for the late reply & thanks for all the reply...
first, between caldina, forester, airtrek (all wagon)... caldina (GT4) is a beauty , but can resist the boxer from forester (with manual)... airtrek is not a pretty car ... performance wise, all have 4wd (awd) , all are 2.0 with turbo...

do i feel old... yes...
how old i am... late 20s...

mid life crisis... maybe, but that happen when i sold of my ek... now its of more of ichy hand syndrome (hahaha) ...

from reviews.. fd2r can be a little hard on ride & handling (which is not good for the wife & baby) ... gti is more of comfort than performance... i can say a fd2r is 80% performance + 20% comfort , while the gti is 55% performance + 45%comfort... mind you the gti is 4wd...

Uhm the gti isn't 4wd unless you are talking about the R32. Both the gti and the Fd2r is FWD. I drive a gti and i have quite a number of friends driving fd2r. In terms of practicality yes i would say the gti wins reason being an auto(dsg) due to the traffic nowadays in KL/PJ and its a much more comfortable ride as compared to the Fd2r. The interior is actually quite spacious and "solid" obviously its a conti after all but then again the Fd2r isn't that bad either. Yes the suspension is harder but it is tolerable for a daily ride not as bad as some people think it is. Of course for a long distance journey Golf GTI will win in terms of comfortable wise.

Performance wise the Fd2r wins hands down IF the speed cut is removed. I have tried dragging with a few fd2r before, stock - stock both cars can still play based on quarter mile but when the speed cut is removed the Fd2r will show its true potential 200 km/h and above when the VTEC kicks in yo! There was this 1 time i was convoying with the fd2r group and i was already on full throttle going about 24x, 2 of the fd2r from the group overtook me and started pulling away from me. Mind you both the cars had minor mods with speed cut removed, intake and exhaust done only and i had my cat-back changed and carbon boot.

Handling wise i would say the Fd2r wins hands down again obviously it is well known to be one of the kings on the track. GTI is more on the comfortable side and again it isn't that bad either just that it will lose to the fd2r for sure but of course the driver plays a big role as well.

Parts for the GTI isn't that hard to find and there are at least 3-4 dealers that brings in quite a number of GTI parts, be it exterior, performance or ICE etc etc. If your a hardcore modder, just to remind you the GTI is a continental hence the prices are on the high side, i'm not too sure about the prices for Fd2r accessories but i don't think it will be cheap either. Just to give you a rough idea on the prices for the gti, original body kits cost easily 8k - 15k and replicas can be found in Singapore for about 3k-ish and above. Remap for stage 1 is around 4k which is known for the "most worth it mod" in terms of performance.

The re-sale value for both the cars is almost on par now i would say for the next 2-3 years maybe? Untill they officially stop production for the fd2r or they already did i'm not sure. I have seen a few fd2r a year old or so selling for 16x - 17x? Golf gti 07,08 also sells for around that price just that its more common compared to the fd2r. Btw if you are planning to get the new golf gti mark 6 its slightly above 200k, 23x if i am not mistaken and the review i gave was based on a golf gti mark 5.

My vote will go to the gti especially if you are expecting a baby soon. The reason why i bought the gti initially was because I couldn't get the car i wanted which is a JDM so i got the 2nd car on my list. But i have no regrets so far and i hope it can last me for another year at least before i get itchy-fied like you :D My advise is try to find both cars and try to drive it around and see which car suits you more. Although there's another + point for the fd2r, its actually limited in a way so you tend to see more GTI on the road compared to the fd2r.

Yes... very well written Bro Nick...

no need for me to elaborate more...

Just wanna tell u why I bought the FD2R:

1. maintenance just like B-series... (coz i've never own a VW b4) (but all my other contis have given me headache)

2. FD2R boot can fit my Golf bag... (Golf GTI... I have to take out my driver and wood 3)

Thats it... other was well explained by Bro Nick...

BTW suprisingly with a lot of loads (4 passenger or even 5 and boot full w luggage) the FD2R seems to be a bit comfort than usual... it suprised me too... and furthermore... a fren of mine just change the suspension of his FD2R... damn it is sweet n comfy... plus it handles better in SIC... Now Im itchy edi... miahahahahahahhahahaha...

p/s: Bro nick... yeah.. i remember that group run... was fun tho... dont forget the cyberjaya rendezvous... if im not mistaken u r the Nick I know la kan kan kan...

peace...

miahahahahahahahahahha...

Nick... that was well written. I think the Thread Starter will find his information very useful.

Err... Can I say a few words too?

I'm a family man with 2 young kids and a 3 month old baby. I drive the FD2R although I do have a smaller city car for the wifey but when I'm around, the whole family goes with me in the R.

I've mentioned this to many people who asked me about the FD2R. It's NOT for everyone. It doesnt matter if you're married, married with kids, or still single. This R is an engineering marvel. The whole package NEEDS to be appreciated. Not just the free revving engine, the track tuned suspension or the super solid chassis. It comes as a whole.

Let me give you an example:
The speed and acceleration on the FD2R is nothing to shout about. But the speed and acceleration in and out of a corner is a different story. So.. if you like to cruise down the highway and maybe play play a bit with other cars.. then this R is not for you. The GTI is a much better cruiser than the R.

The FD2R is for people who loves to drive. People who loves to heel and toe down Genting and Ulu Yam. People who loves track days. I'd say.. people who drives a Lotus (Elise or Exige) is the kind of people who would appreciate the R.

As for modding the car.. well.. that depends on the owner lah. I shall not dwell into that.

Now.. how is it with me and the family?

The only complain I get is from my mother and mother in-law. Coz they say the car is too noisy. My wifey loves the car. My 2 kids love the car. My 2nd kid actually told her friend "my daddy's car can go 250kmh." Coz her friend said that her daddy's beemer can do 160kmh. Hahahaha.. Kids. Anyway, when I'm with the family, I rarely go more than 3500rpm. Rarely go beyond 110kmh. With ample boot space, the baby stroller fits in with no issue and I could fit in other shopping and groceries too.

All this while, I've been driving turbo charged cars. All pushing more than 400bhp. But with this puny 220 bhp engine, I can safely say, it's the BEST all rounder package for me. It can take me to MidValley or 1Utama with no problems.. and it can also blast down Sepang at a little over 2min 40sec.

I hope I didnt bore you with my story here. I just felt I needed to help you in making the right choice and not make you regret it after plonking down 200k.

Cheers and happy driving :driver:

There were pros and cons in owning MK5 Gti or FD2R.....in real life.

To make thing short, I would suggest that the author to add another car model as an option!.

Accord Euro R (CL7)

Reasons being:

(1) Slightly cheaper price compared to both;

(2) handsome car, as compared to FD2R (too many like local FD2) and MK5 (someone mentioned about Satria?)

(3) Manual 6 speed K20R engine (=FD2R);

(4) Comfort (=MK5)

(5) Good handling especially corners (=FD2R)

(6) FWD (=FD2R/MK5)

(7) Low maintenance-timing chain, no turbo (=FD2R)

(8) Good top speed and torque. Good gearing ratio (No need to worry about being tapau-ed by other car. Trust me even MK5/FD2R hardly able to follow hardcore EuroR on high speeding run). Wanna more 100% hp+torque?. Put in K24 blocks, A3 camsets+Hondata+Supercharged!.

...and lastly

(9) BIG2 Space and more headroom for family, much-much better than FD2R and MK5. Can put whatever things in side the rear bonet including the 2 fishing rods!

hehehehehehe.

Any comments guy?.

support support.!!!!

I'm in quite the same dilemma as well. However i am looking at the Golf MK6 instead. But will it be as much fun as the FD2R?

I used to own an EG6 and was starting to track it b4 it was stolen. I also spend lots of time going up genting thru batang kali for yum cha session at the top of the hill. But since my eg was stolen, i have not been up the hill. It has been 6 months

Now I am thinking of trading in my E46 for either a Golf GTi MK6 or a FD2R. I Used to have the EG for the weekend and the Bemmer for regular use. The Beemer is just too soft, and it's already 8 years old.

Any comments anyone? Or any FD2R owners willing to give me a ride in their FD2r?

heard that delivery of mk6 is months.. and i mean months!! known someone who booked around oct 2009 and still haven't had a view of the car.. dunno whether true or not..

go for fd2r, u won't regret it if u loved ur late eg6 (so sorry abt that)...

That's an idea. But i am not sure if Honda Malaysia is bringing in the FD2R 2010 Specs. It comes with diamond lights, retractable side mirrors and and USB port for the Sound System.

no offence guys , caldina is a great car@wagon, love the 3s engine, the boot space, the looks, ... but recently i've been run over by a fd2r, and the sound of the engine, wooww... i miss those high revving vtec engine (i used to own a b16a)... the look is a thing i can live with it...

Next is the golf gti, previously it was a rare species, this year on my way back to east coast, first 1, then 2 then 3... didn't like the look at the first time, but now, maybe ichy hand syndrome... do no laa guys... but the wife prefer the german than the japanese..

*as they say... the grass look greaner on the other side...

does it really matter if FD1 or FD2 converted their ride to look like FD2R? its what inside the hood, the suspension, the interior, the braking system, the tranny and feeling to own a JDM original FD2R does matter..

besides, comparing stock FD2R with stock MK5/6 on drag/circuit is a totally different story..

define quality "japs kenot seem to copy"...

sorry... but i still hate the gt4 with me...
well maybe i'll keep the gt4 and maybe find something else to satisfy my need for high revving... maybe another b16a...
and for the wife needs... well, currently she very happy with gt4 space, comfort and looks...

thanks guys...

Hi Guys... ended up getting a FD2R. It's AWESOME!!!!!! It felt more roomy than my E46. And the power... I'm still coming to terms with it. Been driving ard without opening vtec and it feels scary already. Honda Malaysia was good as i got my car 3 weeks after placing the order.

Good luck choosing... I'm definately a fan of vtecs.
