The four-cylinder boxer engine found in the Subaru WRX is not really what you may call as underpowered, especially with 264-horsepower propelling the sedan from zerotohundred in 6.3 seconds. But Subaru reckons that the Japanese will be needing a little more power than that and for that reason, they put a little more tinkering into the new WRX and gave birth to the new S4.

Not to be confused with the Four Ring’s S4, the WRX S4 is offered exclusively for Subaru’s home market and features a more powerful version of the 2.0-liter boxer power plant. It has been tuned to produce 296-horsepower (300PS) and 295 lb-ft of torque at 5,600rpm. The engine is offered exclusively with the Sport Lineartronic CVT automatic and returns 13.2km/l.

Subaru also explained that the S4 denotes the four values of “sport performance”, “safety performance”, “smart driving” and “sophisticated feel”.

The new WRX S4 is stuffed with an array of new equipment such as EyeSight driving assist system, multi-mode Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), Active Torque Vectoring, and electric parking brake. It also gets the Active Lane Keep steering assistance system, Pre-Collision Reverse Throttle Management and Brake Light Recognition.
