What's the perfect MX-5? For many Miata enthusiasts, it's all about the 2 things they enjoy doing most with their left hand. What is it?

Taking the top off and working the knob.

Yes, the ideal MX-5 only needs to have a hand operated fabric top and a similarly operated gearbox. Yet sadly, buyers in Malaysia can never get the perfect MX-5 especially in the current ND generation.

But wait,

Official Mazda distributor, Bermaz is reported to discontinue the current generation of fabric top MX-5.

The current fabric top MX-5 is solely equipped with a six-speed automatic gearbox. However, the soon-to-arrive RF MX-5 will be paired with the much-awaited six-speed manual gearbox for the first time in Malaysia.

Bermaz has previously hinted that the manual MX-5 will be offered soon, but I never thought that it will be in the form of hardtop. I guess we can never get the perfectly-configured MX-5 here, can we?

The RF is a slightly different proposition compared to the previous-gen NC MX-5 Roadster Coupe. The RF is not going to be a full-convertible car, but instead, it will sport a targa-like configuration with the rear buttresses remaining in place.

Let's just hope that the added weight of the RF mechanism does not spoil its driving characteristics. As long as the car feel nimble paired with signature handling, it should still posses much of the MX-5 soul.

Expect the RF MX-5 to be powered by identical 2.0-litre direct-injected SKyActiv-G four cylinder engine, capable of 158hp and 200Nm of torque.

So, if you want the good ol' hand-operated fabric top, you'd better be quick to put your signature on the dotted line before the units run out. Or if you'd prioritize the row-your-own gear option, you can wait until the RF MX-5 arrive somewhere later this year or early 2017.
