UMW Toyota has officially revealed the new Toyota Vios at its headquarters in Shah Alam. The car is now improved with a new Dual VVT-i engine, new CVT gearbox and the inclusion of VSC in all variants.

In between the existing J, E, G and TRD variants, there’s a new GX variant introduced and is placed below the range-topping TRD Sportivo.

2016 Toyota Vios

Engine:
1.5-litre 4-cylinder Dual VVT-i
Power: 106hp at 6,000rpm
Torque: 140Nm at 4,200rpm
Zerotohundred: n/a
Transmissions: 5-speed manual or CVT with Sport Sequential Shiftmatic mode
Price: 1.5J Manual: RM76,500; 1.5J CVT: RM79,800; 1.5E CVT: RM83,900; 1.5G: RM89,900; 1.5GX: RM92,800; 1.5 TRD Sportivo: RM96,400

Exterior

The appearance of the car remains largely similar to the current Vios, with halogen reflector headlights (J and E variants), LED daytime running lights and rear fog lights as standard. However, the other variants (G, GX and TRD) get projector headlights and acoustic windscreen.

The new GX variant is finished with smoked headlights, dark chrome grille and 2-tone wheels. Meanwhile, the TRD Sportive can be distinguished by its new bodykit and wheels.

As for the colours, the new Toyota Vios adds on 3 new shades – Crimson Spark Red Metallic, Super White II and White Pearl CS (TRD Sportivo only) – to the existing Silver Metallic, Medium Silver Metallic and Attitude Black Mica.

Interior

The new Vios carries the outgoing car’s cabin design, with familiar centre console and steering wheel (leather-wrapped, multifunction for G, GX and TRD).

There’s black-and-tan leather seats on the GX while black leather seats with red stitching are exclusive to the TRD Sportivo. Audio head unit is a 2-DIN for the J variant while the other variants get DVD-AVX infotainment system with a 6.8-inch touchscreen and reverse camera.

Engine and transmission

The biggest change in the new Toyota Vios lies beneath its bonnet. A new 2NR-FE 1.5-litre Dual VVT-i engine with variable valve timing replaces the current 1NZ-FE unit. The new engine can be paired to a 5-speed manual or a new 7-speed CVT – which replaces the current 4-speed automatic.

The new Dual VVT-i mill is EEV-certified; thanks to improvements like all-aluminium construction, Iridium spark plugs, improved piston oil jets and resin-coated piston skirts which help the engine operate more efficiently. According to Toyota, fuel consumption is reduced by up to 18% compared to the outgoing Vios.

Safety

In the safety department, the new Vios is still equipped with 2 airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist and ISOFIX rear child seat anchors. But the main card here is the inclusion of VSC (vehicle stability control) and TRC (traction control) as standard across all variants.

Buyers of the new Toyota Vios are entitled to a 5-year unlimited-mileage transferable warranty. For more, visit www.toyota.com.my.

This time, intake and exhaust manifold is reversed compared to the previous 1NZ-FE engine. Intake at the back, exhaust in front.
