Looks like BMW is inches away from having the new 2016 BMW M6 GT3 for competition as they recently put one prototype unit on display during the Spa 24 Hours. This new GT3 car is set to replace the current Z4 GT3 which aside from being a looker is also a great achiever as it recently won the race at Spa and came second overall in the Nurburgring 24 Hours.

Power will be provided by the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine similar to the one fitted to the M6 road car with BMW confirming that it only has been slightly modified to better accommodate its role as a track car. It is paired up with a six-speed sequential transmission mounted at the rear axle for better weight balance.

The body of the car has been optimized in the wind tunnel and is made out of composite materials to shave off any unnecessary weight where BMW is expecting the final car to weigh less than 1,300kg. Since the M6 GT3 has a longer wheelbase than the Z4 GT3, it should be offering better handling. BMW has also done improvements in reliability, efficiency and ease of maintenance.

“The BMW M6 coupe obviously provided us with a sensational base on which to develop the new car. That makes it twice as much fun for our engineers, working hand in hand with their colleagues at BMW M, to transform it into a car for the race track,” said BMW Motorsport boss Jens Marquardt.
