Porsche claims the ‘GT3’ moniker, forces Aston Martin to change the Vantage GT3’s name?

A while back, we have featured the all-new Aston Martin Vantage GT3. A hardcore road machine which was basically a street-legal version of the race car, the car was accepted with open arms in the auto community. But apparently, not all parties are pleased with the arrival of this new model that Aston had introduced.

The party mentioned here is Porsche, and it is not that they are sour on the car’s performance or how it will threaten the position of the Stuttgart automaker. What they are not pleased about is that this new Vantage uses the ‘GT3’ moniker, in which Porsche is determined to claim it as theirs.

Sounds a bit funny if you consider that the GT3 is also one of the many classes in motorsports, and that is exactly the stand that Aston Martin is taking in, putting examples like the Bentley Continental GT3 R and the Lotus Esprit GT3. As logical as that may sound, Porsche was not going to budge from their stand and in the end, Aston gave in.

But one should not look at Aston as being inferior in the situation as they just did not want to waste any precious resources in the form of money and time for the lengthy and expensive legal battle. As how Aston Martin’s public relations manager for the Americas spoke to Motor Authority about the matter, “rather than distract having a naming disagreement with Porsche, we would prefer to focus our energy and investment on the car and on making sure our customer receive the best possible Aston Martin”.

A wise move from the British marquee. So what will the new car called from this point onwards? The Vantage GT12. Hey, in a way 1+ 2 equals 3, so it is still a GT3 anyways.
