Although fuel saving cars does save a lot of your money in the long run, some of them do not come cheap. Volkswagen’s XL1 has been stealing headlines for its incredibly low fuel consumption but at a price tag of £98,515 (RM 541,519), this fuel saving machine is nothing close to what one would label as ‘affordable’.

Volkswagen had finally decided to put the XL1 into a limited production of 200 units, and this car has been built with fuel saving written all over it. For starters, it weighs only 785kg due to its carbon fiber construction, and has a drag coefficient of only 0.159, half from what you will get from regular street cars. Small cameras are mounted outside the car, omitting the need for side mirrors.

Powering the car is a hybrid powertrain that consists of a 0.8-liter two-cylinder diesel unit producing 57-horsepower and a 27-horsepower electric motor paired to a lithium-ion battery, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission. And with that, you will get a car that sips only 0.9 liters of diesel for every 100km and emits an extremely low CO2 value of 21g/km.

With such incredible figures and produced in a limited number, getting one of these are not going to be as easy as walking into a dealership. Volkswagen are screening the customers and only green lights those who are eligible for the ownership of the XL1 based on their compatibility and ownership experience.
