Word has been going around about Luca di Montezemolo wanting to leave Ferrari, but the words only remained as rumours and nothing else. Unfortunately, this rumour does have its grounds as the Ferrari Chairman had recently announced that he is stepping down from the post he held for 23 years.
“Ferrari will have an important role to play within the FCA Group in the upcoming floatation on Wall Street. This will open up a new and different phase which I feel should be spearheaded by the CEO of the Group.”
“This is the end of an era and so I have decided to leave my position as Chairman after almost 23 marvellous and unforgettable years in addition to those spent at Enzo Ferrari’s side in the 1970’s,” he said in a press release.
“Ferrari is the most wonderful company in the world. It has been a great privilege and honour to have been its leader. I devoted all of my enthusiasm and commitment to it over the years. Together with my family, it was, and continues to be, the most important thing in my life,” he added.
As for now, Ferrari will be led directly by Sergio Marchionne and there are no indications for the time being on whether there will be a replacement to permanently take Montezemolo’s place. Marchionne is not exactly pleased with Montezemolo’s move where he decided to cap Ferrari’s annual production at 7,000 units to maintain exclusivity of the brand.
