It looks like the move to get autonomous cars on the streets are not the only one being developed by auto manufacturers as Audi is putting a lot of attention in getting a car around a track in racing pace. And with their RS7 Piloted Driving Concept Car, Audi had successfully demonstrated that such feat is actually possible.

It may take some time to believe but the RS7 Sportsback took a little over two minutes to navigate itself around the 4.6-kilometer circuit, without being navigated by a driver. This new concept uses millimetre-accurate GPS system, a forward-facing camera, and a complex on-board networking system to operate the car’s controls like the steering, throttle valve, brakes, the eight-speed auto transmission and also the Quattro all-wheel drive system.

“The top performance by the Audi RS7 today substantiates the skills of our development team with regard to piloted driving at Audi. The derivations from series production – particularly in terms of precision and performance – are of great value for our future development steps,” said Professor Ulrich Hackenberg, Audi AG board member for technical development.

Audi had already included a couple of their ‘piloted’ technologies into their production vehicles like the A6 and A7, where they benefit from side assist, active lane assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop and go function.
