Yellow Means be Prepared to Stop? Not in China

If you happen to find yourself driving in mainland China, then you better be a bit extra cautious on the law over there as they had just implemented a new and seemingly absurd rule rewritten by the Chinese authorities. As in January 1st 2013, it has become illegal to those driving in China to go through not only the red light, but also for the yellow light as well.

While this may sound absurd, the Chinese authorities think that this is a necessary move to reduce the road fatalities that China experiences every year, which is somewhere in the region of 250,000. And this figure is also a worrying matter as it is the leading cause of death among the residents between the ages of 15 and 44, according to the World Health Organization.

Nevertheless, it is virtually impossible to stop at a light as one would not know when exactly it is going to change, and it was not long until this weird law is being bombarded for its major flaw. But despite the controversy going around, China’s Ministry of Public Security is determined to defend this out of the ordinary ruling.

This is implemented because previously the driver intentionally accelerate as fast as they can when the light turns yellow and not like what you mentioned would not know. The car might be 10-20 meters away and might be travelling at 80km/h when crossing the intersection. This commonly happen even in residential area. It is really scary if you're a pedestrian or riders.

Actually the ruling will not penalty the driver if he already crossed the stop line... just like what you said it is impossible to stop and would not know.
