After 40 years and 3 generations, the infamous Volkswagen Scirocco has finally reached its production milestone. The millionth mark. Despite going out of production for almost 20 years, the badge revived in 2008 with the 3rd generation Scirocco that we all know and love.
Based on the Golf Mk5, the Scirocco was an absolute eye-changer to the VW fanboys – with it’s low slung roofline, and sporty shape. It was developed to be less practical, and sportier than the Golf. With its wider-track and 100kilos weight shed, it was definitely the more exciting of the two.
5 years of production later, it proved a success as Volkswagen have produced over 200,000 units (204,350), with a range of fast petrol engines and fuel-saving, environmental friendly diesels. Despite the Americans did not get the opportunity to own the Scirocco Mk3 (it was not sold in the US), the production numbers are still epic.
To celebrate the millionth mark milestone, VW has launched a Germany & China ONLY special edition called, the Scirocco Million Edition. It will only be available in Black, which is mated with ‘Million Edition’ livery. The frontal fascia will also differ from the standard Scirocco, as it will be fitted with R-line bumpers and side sills. The rear-lights will also be smoked just like the ones on the Scirocco R and ‘Million’ door sills to remind you that its a special edition.
The Scirocco Mk3 is due for a replacement very soon, although there has been no final word from Volkswagen themselves, we should be expecting a tentative release date for next year – 2014.
